I agree with TCMeyer, grind down the spine until it meets the remnants of the tip and then sharpen it from there. I did this recently on a knife for a friend that had been badly abused. It came out looking like nothing had ever happened to it and my friend was quite pleased.
Those mandoline slicers scare me. Whenever I’m watching Chopped and…[Read more]

I have no personal experience with that type of scope, but I’d be interested in your thoughts on it if you decide to get it. My suspicion is that it will be awkward to use because the screen is directly mounted on the scope itself. It doesn’t look like you can adjust the viewing angle of the screen independently from moving the scope.

You can see an example of how the Tormek adapter is used here.

There are a few options. One is to go for a wider angle. I know that’s a compromise, but it will work and you don’t need anything extra.
If you want alternatives to the low angle adapter then check out this thread: Down & Dirty LAA Mod

Organic replied to the topic Stone Stops with rebound caps and Nylon screw in the forum Want to Sell 5 years, 3 months ago
I would like to say that these are a great accessory. They work exactly as advertised with no risk of marring the guide rods. The stops beneath the stones prevent you from accidentally scratching the face of your knife and the stops above your stone prevent you from accidentally slipping off of the edge. This is a great safety improvement because…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Uneven Bevels, Heel to Tip in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 3 months ago
Go check out MarcH’s thread on How I find the sweet spot. The answer you seek is in that thread. Basically, you just need to play around with the position of the knife in the clamp a bit more in order to find a spot that is a better compromise. My guess is that you need to clamp closer to the tip and get the blade higher in the jaws if possible.…[Read more]

I remember from a video that Josh made that the number of washers went back and forth during the prototyping stage of the clamp development. I don’t think there’s any problem caused by removing a set of the washers.

This is why it is best to use results rather than an arbitrary number of strokes to guide the sharpening process. You probably failed to apex the bevels. You will be well served to go back to a lower grit and sharpen until you feel a burr.

I’m enjoying seeing the process of the conversion, but that looks like tons of work.
For the amount of effort it takes to modify a Harbor Freight belt sander into a suitable sharpening platform I’d gladly just pay more for one of the name brand setups that’s ready to go out of the box. I’m lazy.

Organic replied to the topic Do these knives fit? in the forum Getting Started 5 years, 4 months ago
I think all of those knives will fit. The very narrow knives (fillet and paring) might require the use of an obtuse angle to prevent the clamp from getting in the way of the sharpening stones. The low angle adapter can help with that. Also, fillet knives require extra care since they are usually quite flexible, but they can be sharpened.

Your knives will still get sharp during the break in period for the stones. Once the stones are worn in then the knives will become sharp to a greater degree.
You dont one have to spend multiple hours on a knife especially if you don’t care about how shiny the edge is. The first time you sharpen each knife will take some time (how long depends o…[Read more]

I was looking through the articles at the excellent blog Knife Steel Nerds (https://knifesteelnerds.com) and I found this quiz. I thought it would be fun to post here and see what kinds of scores y’all are getting.

I got 10/11 without using the Google.
