This thread may be of interest to some newer folks so posting this to bump it to the top of Recent Threads.
There has been a few threads lately where users are looking to reduce the time to re-profile badly damaged knives and or change a bevel angle considerably. This too bothered me so I build this custom variable speed harbor freight 1x…[Read more]

Polyurethane?? on a cutting board? Normally you apply mineral oil, at least those were the instructions in high school wood shop and with every wooden board I have ever purchased.

I built a modified 1×30 belt sander using a Harbor Freight belt sander, treadmill motor and control, custom 3d printed drive wheel, and angle gauge adapter. This let me re-profile the bevel to the correct angle using progressively finer belts. Then go the the WE and start at 400, eliminating the huge deep scratches of the 80 grit.. The sand…[Read more]

Not sure where I read about it, but have it in hand but not opened yet.. Check ProTecta and see if that might do the trick https://www.amazon.com/ProTecta-Bottle-Precision-lubricating-applicator/dp/B0041OXUZS

airscapes replied to the topic All the threads and screws getting loose during sharpening in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 1 month ago
There are a couple of threads on this subject but try wiggling the bracket as you tighten the thumb screws. The end of the shaft has a point on it that matches the tapered hole in the bar. If you are not centered just right, it comes loose.

No experience with cutting sharpening stones other than the old oil stone my grand father had which I dropped and broke for him as a child:-(
That said, my wet saw cuts granite, brick, ceramic, marble and concrete, fairly sure it will cut any stoneish material. Just like a any saw, you will loose all the material within the kerf of the blade s…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic Challenges of low blade height in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 1 month ago
Do you happen to own the standard vise? If so, swap it on to your base and get a shorter screw at the local hardware store for the top so your strops don’t hit it. You will be able to get a lower angle with the STD vise than the gen 3 on a really short knife. This is what I have been doing to get to 15 degrees on my fillet knife. The draw…[Read more]

BB your’s are some of the ones pictured. Marc had been using and testing prototypes which exposed issues I fixed prior to selling any.
There is a sheet metal version posted someplace in the giant MOD thread which was my inspiration, couldn’t find it just now but I know I saw it..

airscapes replied to the topic Ultrasonic cleaners in the forum Getting Started 5 years, 2 months ago
I guess my point is a soft scrub brush and some dish soap is a lot less expensive and complicated and I am going to say will do a Much better job than a ultrasonic cleaner .. So far all I do is hit them with some alcohol spray and wipe them off.. I use the spay bottle of alcohol to remove the red marker I use on the bevel while sharpening. T…[Read more]

After reading this I ordered a couple of these even though I have no ceramic anything. Was hoping I could find some other off label uses other than rust, and now pencil on wood, which will be wonderful! Anyone have any other confirmed uses?
