wickededge replied to the topic Question on strop microns vs ceramic microns in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 1 month ago
Hi Pat,
You can strop with a higher grit because the abrasive acts very differently with a soft substrate. The action of the strop is also unique because they can stretch the edge up into a very fine peak.

That’s a good thought. I’ll look into the equipment and processing time for this and see if it makes sense.

We go round and round here about whether to break the stones in before shipping. Here are some of the pros/cons we’ve come up with:
Pros:
- New users will have more refined edges more quickly
- Experienced users won’t have to take the time to break the new stones in
Cons:
- New users will not have the extra coarseness of the stones to help…

wickededge replied to the topic Re: New products announced at the Blade Show! in the forum Product Announcements 5 years, 3 months ago
Hi Steve,
We don’t have any updates at the moment, other than that we’ve finished reviewing the feedback we collected/created during Blade Show and we’re making some adjustments to the designs. From there, we’ll be creating another round of prototypes for testing and reviewing. I’ll start posting about results once we are able to try out the new…[Read more]

wickededge replied to the topic ? counterfeit 12 inch guide rods . . . . in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 5 years, 4 months ago
The size of the rods is due to the more complicated evolution of the paddles. As we began experiencing problems with the older design of paddles, which specified a 0.250″ but were consistently larger and creating too much slop, we increased the rod size. When we switched to the new paddle design, we had to make the bore match the majority of…[Read more]

wickededge replied to the topic Re: the new 2200/3000 stones? in the forum Abrasives 5 years, 4 months ago
These new stones do introduce some complexity in figuring out a good grit progression and it’s impossible to create a one-size-fits-all answer because of the variety of different abrasives people already have in their collections. Another issue in recommending progressions is that the answer depends on your goals:
- Maximum polish
- Maximum…

wickededge replied to the topic It's a long wait in the forum Product Announcements 5 years, 5 months ago
I like these ideas, have definitely played with a linear bearing system as an option. Another thing I’ve tried is adding a pivot to a handle that allows the platen holding the stone to stay vertical/plumb even though the guide rod is at an angle. It worked relatively well but is clumsy. I’ve also designed some platens that attach to the handles…[Read more]

Usually knives that we have finished on the Micro-Fine stones outperform knives we’ve finished by lapping in sharpness tests.

I’ve seen some of these mods before and we’re aware that it’s something people need. We haven’t gotten to work on creating one yet but are totally open to the idea. Is there a consensus on the specs needed i.e. length, width, resolution of the grid, method of attachment etc..?

wickededge replied to the topic Ceramic Stones in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 7 months ago
They do make a knife significantly sharper in the one dimension that the BESS sharpening machine measures. I like to use them after the 1500 diamonds as well if I’m not going for a mirror finish. If I’m going for a mirror finish and also want a sharper edge, then I’ll create the primary bevel at a lower angle and polish it as much as needed, then…[Read more]

Thanks for the pictures @Expidia and for the suggestion of the bushings /w the LAA. Do reach out to Josh in case he can help more quickly. It might also be worth trying to buff them out yourself. Worst case, it won’t work or will make it look worse, but you were already prepared to replace the blade anyway, so it couldn’t hurt to try.

@Expidia, you might try reaching out to Josh at Razor Edge Knives to see if he can clean it up for you. He does pretty phenomenal work.

Expedia,
It looks like the stones are able to hit the side of the blade below the shoulder when the knife is mounted in the LAA. You might try to check it by putting some tape over the surface of the stone and then resting the stone against the blade to see if it’s hitting the side rather than sitting on the edge. Some people use a stop collar to…[Read more]

Yes, move the tip closer to the clamp and tilt it down just a little bit. Use the marker to observe how the stones are tracking and make small adjustments as necessary. You might try starting with the tip around A.5.

Jon – if you purchased the Pro-Pack 3, then the vise will fit. If you have the Pro-Pack 2 and are adding the Gen 3 Vise, then it won’t fit, it’ll be too tall.
