Marc H replied to the topic use a riser block on Gen III vise? in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 5 years, 11 months ago
Jeff, l have installed a riser block, (the old style square riser block) with my WE130 and also with my Gen 3 Pro. Both set-ups use the lastest Gen 3 vises with the tension adjuster and split jaws.
The riser block does allow you to achieve lower angle settings. Maybe not as low as 12 dps. That depends on how tall the knives are. Also you ca…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Scissor attachment in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 11 months ago
The scissor adapter is helpful and useful tool to hold scissors in a position to allow sharpening them with the Wicked Edge. There are many, many different scissor size, designs and shapes. The adapter for me is an intuitive tool. I had to figure out how to clamp the several different scissors I sharpened in a way that held them positioned wh…[Read more]

Tom I believe the number 15RC is a model indicator rather then a hardness indicator, after looking at images of Puma Folding Knives I saw one was labeled 105RC and there is not a steel that hard.

Marc H replied to the topic Single bevel knife .. how to sharpen it? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Exactly, I would just ignore the primary grind and sharpen it as if it was not there. Like any other knife.

Marc H replied to the topic Single bevel knife .. how to sharpen it? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Ah, you were holding back. The single grind is only evident in the first photos after seeing the better, closer up photos in your second post, and knowing where to look for it. I made a assumption from a glance. I didn’t know you knew the brand and had other pictures of similar knives.
That being said I stick by my story…it is an old kn…[Read more]

It appears it’s an antique filet knife. Like something I found in my grandmothers kitchen drawer 50 years ago. I would take any edge profile you see with a grain of salt. There’s no telling what that oldie’s been through. I’m guessing it is stainless steel, otherwise the blade would probably be black with patina.
I’d profile it at (50/50) eve…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Which Strops to start with? in the forum Stropping 5 years, 11 months ago
Will, I always use the 4µ/2µ set on every knife I sharpen, no matter which grit I end off with. If I’m looking for a more refined edge I also use the 1µ/0.5µ pair.

Marc H replied to the topic Edge losing shine after stropping? in the forum Stropping 5 years, 11 months ago
Justin, I didn’t mean to imply you had positioned the knife incorrectly. I was just suggesting it as something to consider. From what you are sharring it sounds like you’re confident in your ability and well on your way. I’m sure your outcomes will continue to improve as your stones get more broken in and you continue to become more con…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Forum and our sharpening community.
There is no break-in period on the strops but they do have a learning curve unto themselves. Dropping down 2º suggests you’re doing your homework and that you’ve done some pre-reading on the forum. When you reclamp an already sharpened knife, like your kitchen knife, it’s super im…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Price list in the forum Sharpening as a Business 5 years, 11 months ago
I would suggest you not price the sharpening job solely on length. A knife’s length alone is not a true representation of the effort necessary to sharpen the knife edges to a level or standards you’ll be satisfied with. A small folder with it’s difficulties to clamp and work around thumb pegs and hinge mechanisms can be more difficult and time c…[Read more]

This is most accurate and the highest resolution Digital Cube I own and use. The instruments along with better tolerance on the guide rods and handle bores do help with setting truer angles, and help remove or eliminate the slop between guide rods and platens. Nothing though, contributes as much to precise sharpening results as good c…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic What next? Micro fine? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Matt, what are you looking to accomplish? Are you looking for a more polished, mirrored bevel, or a sharper knife edge?
For me the micro fine ceramics don’t fit well into your progression as an additional step in your current progression. To use the micro-fines I’d be adding them in to the progression in a place where I’d leave off something e…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Gen 3 angle setting in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 11 months ago
Woody the angle indicators on the Gen 3 are only a suggested angle. Just like the angles indicated on the square bar for the other models. These demarcations do correspond with, I believe, a knife edge 1/2″ above the vise, jaw lines. The numbers are really there to show the direction to move the angle adjusting lever arm, left or right to d…[Read more]

“I’m from Missouri. … Missouri, a state in middle of the US, is known as the “Show Me” state. As legend would have it, they take a stubborn pride in being skeptical, not accepting an assertion without visible proof. So the phrase in question literally means “I don’t quite believe you.
Consistently rolling edges to left, is key here. If all…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Applying Diamond Emulsion Stropping Compounds in the forum Stropping 5 years, 11 months ago
Keith, thanks for being such a good sport about it. Both my 4µ and 2µ emulsions are a milky or muddy brown/grey looking compound. I don’t notice any difference in the feel, (i.e., grit dependent), when using the two different grit strops.

Kevin, you’ve had nothing but bad experiences. Call W.E. they’ll make it right. Wicked Edge really needs to get they’re product vendors to improve their quality control! It reflects very poorly on Wicked Edge. I’m guessing they bottled a bad batch of 4µ emulsion. It’s easily remedied but a major inconvenience to users who spent their good…[Read more]
