I have been carrying it almost every day since I got it and I’m still really liking it. I eventually sharpened it at 16 degrees and polished it to 4 microns. I went through all the diamond stones up to 1500, then used 6 micron lapping film and 4 micron strops. After that, I made a tiny micro-bevel at 20 degrees with my 1500 grit stones. I have…[Read more]

It looks like your sharpener shipped yesterday, 1/25.

wickededge replied to the topic A few observations/questions from this weeks use in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 10 months ago
@Josh-L these are all great questions/observations.
- Is it normal to work a lot harder on one side to create a burr than the other?
- It is normal because you’ve already reached the apex on the first side. In order to keep the bevels even, you should go ahead and do the same amount of work on each side. What I prefer to do instead when…

wickededge replied to the topic Skinning knife angle in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 10 months ago
For me, 20-22 degrees has always worked very well for skinning. Going with a more acute angle increases the risk in putting holes in the hide by accidentally cutting through.

This is a great observation. We’ve done a lot of testing over the years to try to better understand what part angle and finish play in edge retention. Generally speaking, we found that lower angles, within the limits of the steel’s characteristics, helped with edge retention. A very simplified explanation of why goes something like this:
Force…[Read more]

wickededge replied to the topic How to mount base? in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 10 months ago
@Josh-L I misread the original post. The screws are the right ones. The issue is that the bases vary in thickness, so we include the washer in case it’s necessary but it isn’t required to use.

Hi Josh,
The screws should have been in the package. Pleasee provide your order number and we’ll get some on the way to you asap.

The listing you’re seeing on Amazon must be an old one from one of our dealers. We stopped including the Scissors Adapter with the PPIII last year when we pulled the product for redesign.

Thank you MarcH for posting this. Chris and I agonized yesterday about how to get more information and how to share it with everyone here. I’m glad you had the gumption to go ahead an do it.
I will miss Mark. I never met him in person, but conversed with him frequently and grew to be very fond of him. He was a constant presence on the forum and…[Read more]

I can attest to having begged hair for testing from my wife, my mother and some co-workers. Everyone has obliged, but not enthusiastically.

I have not 🙁 it’s been crazy busy around here and will probably be so until after Shot Show in a couple of weeks.

wickededge replied to the topic Chef Knife Challenges for new user in the forum Welcome Mat 6 years, 10 months ago
Thanks Derek,
That does help. At a guess, I’m thinking it might be mounted too far forward. Did you use the “Finding the Sweet Spot” method to mount it? If you already did that and the knife is in the correct spot, then yes, you probably just want to spend more time along the belly until you apex the edge there and get a burr.

Derek – can you upload a picture of how you have the knife mounted?

wickededge replied to the topic New guy grinding his clamps by accident in the forum Welcome Mat 6 years, 10 months ago
You may want to consider sharpening things like paring knives and steak knives at wider angles anyway because the really shallow angles on those blades won’t hold up long, especially on the steak knives.

wickededge replied to the topic New guy grinding his clamps by accident in the forum Welcome Mat 6 years, 10 months ago
Yes, it’s just the nature of a design that clamps the blade. There are pros and cons to the approach, but I think the pros far outweigh the cons.

wickededge replied to the topic wicked edge go pre order in the forum Product Announcements 6 years, 10 months ago
It feels like it’s taking forever because it is! It’s been a really long road. The good news is that the sharpeners are even nicer than I’d hoped. We’ve shipped all the pre-orders placed up through Aug 15 and we’re getting them out as quickly as the shop can get them to us. Their pace has been pretty sporadic, with the biggest lag due to…[Read more]

wickededge replied to the topic Can a Wicked Edge sharpen an axe? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 10 months ago
It’s actually the other way around. Curtis dubbed it the SWAT but our part name is VSTA. A lot of people on the forum, like me, got used to calling it the SWAT jig and haven’t gotten out of the habit.
