You’re not wrong in seeing a shallower angle on the right side of thick knives. The sharpen is designed around an average blade thickness of 1/8″. I use my thumbnail to see if the edge bites in easily and that’s usually enough. It’s probably safer and smarter to just use a plastic pen or marker for the same effect: hold the marker/pen at an angle to the blade, ideally similar to the angle of the stones, and set it on the edge. For some reason, my last post didn’t take. I used:

Bottom Holes
D6 on the Advanced Alignment Guide or 1.25″ from the front of the vise to the tip of the knife
20 degrees

I was just checking out how the marks on the guide rod lined up with the semicircles with a starting diameter of 7″. It doesn’t show well in the photos because the paper I was using was flopping around but the marks on the rods lined up pretty well throughout the rotation. @graphite I’m trying to post photos of my results of the little test I made with the 7″ diameter circles and the angle set to 20 dps but so far not having much luck.

@graphite – now that I’m playing around with this, I’m wondering how you came up with a starting circle w/ radius of 7″ tangent to the top of the vise. Wouldn’t we be looking for a series of cones that have their centers at the pivot point of the guide rod and wouldn’t the cones change based on the angle at which the pivots are set?

I do have the Manix 2 though I don’t remember exactly the settings I used. I think that I set the spine on both prongs of the Depth Key in the top holes of the vise and I clamp the blade so that the forward 1/3 of the Spyder Hole is covered by the jaws.
