NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic Does Angle Gauge Cause Loading? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 8 months ago
I also use the Floureon DXL360S angle gauge and find it to be the best/most accurate of several I’ve used.
I have seen no signs of magnetic loading of the swarf but I really haven’t been looking for it.
The accuracy and USB charging got me to buy it.

NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic use a riser block on Gen III vise? in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 5 years, 8 months ago
Jeff,
I went to the upgrade page and it did show the riser blocks. However, that was the first step in determining what system you have. After you choose the riser block it asks you choose your vise type. Then a page loads with the upgrades that are applicable to your equipment.
Maybe Clay can wiegh in on whether a riser block is available?

NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic Price list in the forum Sharpening as a Business 5 years, 9 months ago
I have sharpened at one gun show so far and probably won’t do it again. To answer your specific question, I didn’t have a price list posted. Like Marc said, there are other factors to consider along with the length when setting the price.
Almost all the knives I sharpened were folders with blades <= 4″. I asked $8.00 for most but several were…[Read more]

Expidia,
I’m with Organic on this topic. The research I’ve done, as well as my experience, says the lower edge angle is better for edge retention.
Not sure everyone will get this but “I’m from Missouri” when it comes to just about everything. So, if you just want to test the theory please post your experiences.
Can you post some scope p…[Read more]

Yes, I have tumbled into the pit of 3D printing. My first attempt at printing with flexible TPU filament was a disaster. I’m going to stick with PLA/PETG for the time being. So, it may be a month or two before I can make the paddle bumpers.

Airscapes,
Got a chance to try them on my modified Gen3 Pro. I raised the clamp about 2″ using a riser block I bought from WE. I did this so I could utilize the entire length of the sharpening paddle on pocket knives. Sharpening the taller chef knives it was fine.
This weekend I sharpened two chef knives and used the bumpers. The 7mm did…[Read more]

I’ve only seen it when it is on the aircraft. Never watched how it was removed so I can’t say.

Airscapes,
Most likely it is speed tape. We use it where I work – Wikipedia blurb below.
Speed tape is an aluminium pressure-sensitive tape used to do minor repairs on aircraft and racing cars. It is used as a temporary repair material until a more permanent repair can be carried out. It has an appearance similar to duct tape, for which it i…[Read more]

I’ve received mine but have not had a chance to use them yet. I will post a review once I do.
And thanks again for sharing.

Tony,
I had the same problem early on with both the heel and tip area. tcmeyer had an excellent post about how much of the paddle grit travels over those areas. I did a quick search in the knowledge base and couldn’t find the post.
What I found was that I was starting the stroke at the heel with an immediate push forward. That area did not…[Read more]

NorCalQ,
Your original question concerned Chef knives and the type of edge. Personally, I go up to the 1500 diamond and stop there for the two knives my wife uses for everything. I’m also touching them up every two weeks or so. For those with an edge tester, they leave the WE around 130gf and when I take them back to touch up they are ar…[Read more]

Hutch,
I follow Organic’s process – raise the burr on each side at the first grit and then rely on the sharpie and scope to ensure the following grits reach the apex.
This process has served me well with few exceptions. When things seem wonky it is usually a loose lock nut and the angle has shifted on one side. Or, my AccuRemote angle cube s…[Read more]

NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic Knife Tools Suggestions? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 10 months ago
I have taken less than 10 knives apart so I am not, by any means, an expert. As Josh says, Wiha is a quality tool company. I found them because (I believe) Spyderco recommended them in a post somewhere. I bought the set below and am very happy with them.
However, two of the ten knives used security torx bits which are not included in the Wih…[Read more]

Expedia,
When you fill out the payment form for the Hobbigoni with a U.S. address they drop the VAT and add a shipping charge.
I just noticed they offer a left hand version. I must of missed that when I ordered mine. I thought it was awkward where they located the on button.
If you are interested in a right hand model PM me.

NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic Bubba Blade in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Steve,
The problem I’ve had with filet knives in general is that they tend to flex laterally as the stone presses the blade on both sides past the vise clamp. Hence, you’re not maintaining a set angle to create a refined apex. With thicker shorter blades it’s not an issue. There are several posts in other threads about stabilizing long thin bl…[Read more]

I am registered in TX as an LLC. If you define a business as working and not charging for services I indeed have a business! I read a book quite awhile ago about the 10000 hour rule to become expert at a task/sport/endeavor. Had to look it up – Outliers by Malcom Gladwell. Anyway, that stuck with me and I look at every knife that I s…[Read more]

NotSharpEnuff replied to the topic Help – scratches on blade in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Mark,
When I upgraded to the newer vise I added plastic stop collars for the stones. When I set my stones I move the stone to the extreme edges of the blade. At the farthest point with the stone about a ~1/4″ above the bevel I set the stop collar.
From what I can see from your pics, the knife was set with the handle very close to the vise. Wi…[Read more]
