Marc H replied to the topic Which Strops to start with? in the forum Stropping 5 years, 10 months ago
Will, I always use the 4µ/2µ set on every knife I sharpen, no matter which grit I end off with. If I’m looking for a more refined edge I also use the 1µ/0.5µ pair.

Marc H replied to the topic Edge losing shine after stropping? in the forum Stropping 5 years, 10 months ago
Justin, I didn’t mean to imply you had positioned the knife incorrectly. I was just suggesting it as something to consider. From what you are sharring it sounds like you’re confident in your ability and well on your way. I’m sure your outcomes will continue to improve as your stones get more broken in and you continue to become more con…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Forum and our sharpening community.
There is no break-in period on the strops but they do have a learning curve unto themselves. Dropping down 2º suggests you’re doing your homework and that you’ve done some pre-reading on the forum. When you reclamp an already sharpened knife, like your kitchen knife, it’s super im…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Price list in the forum Sharpening as a Business 5 years, 11 months ago
I would suggest you not price the sharpening job solely on length. A knife’s length alone is not a true representation of the effort necessary to sharpen the knife edges to a level or standards you’ll be satisfied with. A small folder with it’s difficulties to clamp and work around thumb pegs and hinge mechanisms can be more difficult and time c…[Read more]

This is most accurate and the highest resolution Digital Cube I own and use. The instruments along with better tolerance on the guide rods and handle bores do help with setting truer angles, and help remove or eliminate the slop between guide rods and platens. Nothing though, contributes as much to precise sharpening results as good c…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic What next? Micro fine? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Matt, what are you looking to accomplish? Are you looking for a more polished, mirrored bevel, or a sharper knife edge?
For me the micro fine ceramics don’t fit well into your progression as an additional step in your current progression. To use the micro-fines I’d be adding them in to the progression in a place where I’d leave off something e…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Gen 3 angle setting in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 11 months ago
Woody the angle indicators on the Gen 3 are only a suggested angle. Just like the angles indicated on the square bar for the other models. These demarcations do correspond with, I believe, a knife edge 1/2″ above the vise, jaw lines. The numbers are really there to show the direction to move the angle adjusting lever arm, left or right to d…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic My kitchen knife edges tend to roll to left side? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
“I’m from Missouri. … Missouri, a state in middle of the US, is known as the “Show Me” state. As legend would have it, they take a stubborn pride in being skeptical, not accepting an assertion without visible proof. So the phrase in question literally means “I don’t quite believe you.
Consistently rolling edges to left, is key here. If all…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Applying Diamond Emulsion Stropping Compounds in the forum Stropping 5 years, 11 months ago
Keith, thanks for being such a good sport about it. Both my 4µ and 2µ emulsions are a milky or muddy brown/grey looking compound. I don’t notice any difference in the feel, (i.e., grit dependent), when using the two different grit strops.

Kevin, you’ve had nothing but bad experiences. Call W.E. they’ll make it right. Wicked Edge really needs to get they’re product vendors to improve their quality control! It reflects very poorly on Wicked Edge. I’m guessing they bottled a bad batch of 4µ emulsion. It’s easily remedied but a major inconvenience to users who spent their good…[Read more]

Marc H started the topic What angle for which Knife? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 11 months ago
Here’s a good general guide that may help you to decide what angle to profile knives to, based on the type of knife.
Here’s a fun video to help explain it.

Maybe this article about edge retention VS edge angle will help.
I’ve started another thread to address “expidia’s rolling edge issue” to not hijack this topic anymore so then we already have.

Keith, I purchased my first W.E. to sharpen my collection of Wustoff knives. Since then I have found many Japanese Chef ‘s knives made with, IMO, better steels, at less expensive prices. I suggest you shop these befoe pulling the trigger on the Wustoff.

Marc H replied to the topic Micro Fine Ceramic vs. Strops in the forum Stropping 5 years, 11 months ago
Michael, I find the ceramics to be an individual entity all unto themselves. I can’t compare the results from the ceramics with any other sharpening/polishing medium. Even the micro-fine ceramics, (1.4µ/0.6µ, my preferred ceramic) differ from the super-fine ceramics, (1200/1600 grit). They are made with two different methods. Be aware that the…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Stropping Compounds in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 11 months ago
Woody, I really believe the most important aspect is the grit of the stropping compund you’re looking to use. All the different types you mention are strictly a way to apply and distribute the grit particle to your strop medium. I honestly have only used the paste and the diamond emulsion spray. The diamond spray, from what I understand, is ju…[Read more]

Who’s to say where a handle would suit you best. Possible you can strap a handle centered on the the top to give it a try. Then maybe strap it the other way to see if two side mounted handles wouldn’t serve you better. After you decide what works you can mount the handles permanently.
My question to you is how often and how far will you be tr…[Read more]

My new style, larger diameter rods are like your’s 0.254″- 0.2545″.
The older rods were 0.25″.
Also, the bore size on the “new style” plastic platens have been tightened slightly with an improved manufacturing process and materials. The older style platens had black centers with color coded insert mounting plates. The new handles are b…[Read more]
