That riser block is a Wicked Edge part off an upgrade kit from years ago that I wasn’t using any longer and I had in my parts box. A forum particpant “rummels” recently posted he had gotten a “riser block” from Wicked Edge. So try to contact them. It’s simply a bolt on part requiring longer screws.

Reid, a couple other options are
- Remove the thumb stud to get it out of your way
- Disassemble the knife, clamp and sharpen just the blade
- Try a “Tormek Small Knife Adapter” which allows you to clamp the knife handle to offset the blade out away from the vise. This different angle often gives unobstructive blade access. (Some users have c…

The angle setting reduction is just “a suggestion”, not a requirement.
Your doing everything right. That’s why we refer to it as “your sharpening technique”. It’s an individualized thing. We each need to find what works best for each of us and adapt our individual techniques to utilize these differences. That’s good that you experimented wit…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Is Strop Repair Possible? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 8 months ago
Ted I always use the stone stop collars when sharpening, both an upper and lower stops to limit the sharpening stone motion and improve my stone use efficiency across the knife edge. I just remove the top stop collars when stropping.

Ted after several years using my Wicked Edge and helping with this Forum I have picked up some new information on old questions, asked again, by newer Forum participants. Some of these same old conversations introduce something I’ve never heard, put into maybe a different context, or that I’d just forgotten and now a light has gone off when…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Is Strop Repair Possible? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 8 months ago
Ted, it is imperative to remove the upper shaft collars, (i. e., stone stops) before stropping. You don’t want anything to halt or impede your edge trailing, up and off, stroke direction and stroke movement or progress with the leather in the middle of the blade. The sudden abrupt stop in forward strop movement is almost guaranteed to cut or g…[Read more]

Ted I’ll follow Organic’s cue and take issue with this single statement:
Actually stropping requires seemingly strong pressure and probably more strokes then you would have imagined. With leather strops the general consensus is reduce your sharpening bevel angle by 1.5º to 2º less for the stropping phase, for the newbie. That means if you…[Read more]

Brewbear, of the two Ceramic Stone types offered by Wicked Edge I also prefer the “Micro-Fine” Style (1.4µ/0.6µ), over the Super Fine (1200/1600). Remember the ceramics take a lot of breaking in before you’ll feel good results. The effect from the ceramics in my experience is a sharper edge, not so much a shinier bevel.
Yes you are correct abo…[Read more]

Robert, is that the hardcase with wheels or just a carry case?
I’m guessing you’re moving up to a newer or different model, since you’re keeping the stones?

For those of us employing solid “shaft collars” as stone stop collars, that directly tighten the set screws against steel guide rods to fix their position. These have recently come under fire on this forum for the steel set screws gouging or marring the guide rod steel. These shaft collars are available in steel, aluminum and nylon. This fix is…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Storing Strop question in the forum Stropping 5 years, 8 months ago
Michael, each strop handle has two different grit strop compounds. If you use a new/fresh plastic bag each and every time. When you remove the strop handle to use it, discard the bag then roll the strop back up in the new/fresh bag, when finished, it’ll probably help prevent cross-contamination of grit compounds.
Here’s another method for a s…[Read more]

Derek, I would wait till your sharpening stones are well broken in before attempting to sharpen that knife. I always start a new knife with the marker and a wide angle at least 20º to determine the “Sweet spot” clamping position. I use a very fine grit in an attempt to remove just the marker and very little steel. Be sure to works the entir…[Read more]

The guide rods are just wider then 1/4″ and 5/16″ is way too large. I just measured a rod at 33/128″ in fractional inches or 0.2555″ in decimal inches.

HoytFlinger’s offering is $1075 new, (to replace it from Wicked Edge), as it sits in the hard carrying case. He’s taken $275 or 25% off the “new” price.
