One thing to note about the standard vise with jack screw is that the vise has a heilcoil (thread insert) installed for the jack screw. I have read posts where the insert comes out with the screw.
The other day I needed to remove the bottom screw and it bound up as the threads at the end had been some what crushed from cranking the screw do…[Read more]

Yup, I have no knives sitting in need of sharpening, so leaning how to model this wheel was useful to me. Learning about the motor in a treadmill and how it is controlled and wired is interesting to me. My first career from 1984-95 was an automotive repair tech (mechanic) so I like to rip apart things, fix things and fabricate things.. Pers…[Read more]

Back to the motor search, this one was just a bit too big for the HF. In the mean time I 3d Modeled the drive wheel of the HF since the original was molded and not very well round. Not sure how it will hold up as it is ABS and more slippery than the molded wheel. Could not stall it with 1″ bar stock and a good bit of pressure, so should be g…[Read more]

Well got my threadmill and have it apart enough to see I have what I need. Once I get the motor and electronics ripped out and functional on the bench I guess it will be time go buy a HF belt sander. Felt bad ripping apart a functional treadmill but it was not being used so at least part of it will be used! Scrap guys will get something for …[Read more]

HA! Almost as much as the machine! 🙂 But probably the most important part for me to have! No way in this old green earth I can hold something at the same angle for more than 2 seconds when using a belt or wheel..
Thanks for the link!

It takes time.. you can not “Figure on” a set time per knife.. It is probably safe to say..I will be done sometime within the next 8 hours..
This is like replacing the drain pipe from the washer to the stack pipe.. should take about 4 hours but plan on 3 days!

Mine are all coming off.. Diamond stone and Strops.. Strops were purchased from WE separately from the WE 120. As was the 1500/glass

airscapes replied to the topic Finding correct angle in the forum Forum Usability Notes and Requests 5 years, 4 months ago
The numbers on the WE bar will only ever match the cube if the knife you are sharpening sits exactly 5/8″ above the jaws of the vise. This is one of the reasons the angle cube is such a good addition in my opinion. The taller the knife the steeper the angle. Will it make a difference in how the knife cuts if you thought you were sharpening at…[Read more]

That was very helpful! The more I watch the more I just want to go buy a quality machine and be done and happy. After googling the WEN and Rikon It looks like they are all set up for wood working with tables. I don’t see that sharpening guide in any of the literature, is that an after market part or something custom?

Now that is my kind of speed! Will need to source a treadmill and was contemplating buying the HF unit even before seeing this.
Will surely be in touch via PM once I get the parts needed!
Thanks!

Jim, turning the bar around fixed the issue for me. I really do not know if this is an issue for a majority of users. It may just be as new users we don’t take the time to fully center the screw in the indent and just crank it down. Now that it is no centered, it then comes loose. Once you turn the bar so there are no indents, it stays put…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic Thumb screws keep loosening in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 4 months ago
Apparently all of them do this with the screw indents. If you have the angle cube (a really good investment) you can remove the bar and turn it around so the indents are on the opposite side and the screws will not come loss anymore. Once you start using the cube you will need to do this anyway as you will find that preset indents are not co…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic How much magnification do I need to find the sweet spot? in the forum Getting Started 5 years, 4 months ago
Hi Thomas! If you have good vision or good bifocals you don’t need a magnifying glass to find the sweet spot but it does help.
The USB microscope does add a layer of additional complication and require room for the laptop or tablet. However it really does make for a better understanding of what needs to be done and what has been done.
For i…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic 1000 then 1500/2200 or 2200/3000? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 4 months ago
I don’t think those new stones are needed for what you are doing. I do the same with the addition of the 1500, DF 6 then Strop and am actually thinking of stopping at 1500 for most of the kitchen knives to provide a little more tooth. That said, I think you would really like the 1500 added to your progression.
