Sorry Tomas, I didn’t mean to miss lead you and should have been clearer. As I said, I too just wanted to keep the kitchen knives sharp, and had no desire to be a knife guy or sharpen to a mirror finish. But I quickly found great enjoyment and solace in the process and the outcome. I apologize for not being clear on the time spent. Yes 3 hou…[Read more]

Welcome Thomas!
If you have just that one knife to sharpen and you do not plan on using your WE for fun and relaxation, which it is great for, you may want to just pay a pro to take care of that one knife.
If you are an obsessive compulsive perfectionist like most of us who have bought the WE, then I think you will really enjoy turning dull…[Read more]

Thanks Ed! That repair looks great! I have one with a broken tip to do when I get around to it as well.
I have no intentions of sharpening knives on a belt, I know I could never ever develop that kind of muscle control.. I guess I had just better buy some new belts for my Craftsman disc/belt sander and use that. That thing just seem to run to…[Read more]

Thanks Mark, I did go back and see that his is a Viel and found that one new for $289 which is more than I would want to spend https://sharpeningmadeeasy.com/belt.htm
I do have some HF stuff, if fact I have a good bit. Was kind of hoping to find something used of a better quality at a reasonable price.. Although I am guessing these only get s…[Read more]

I have no clue, it is like a 1.5″ or so belt sander, something like what this guy is using.. https://youtu.be/oRWjeDiLw_c Maybe not as large as I am limited on flat surfaces and places where things can free stand.. too much stuff already but I need more!

Not sure what they are called.. see them in videos of knife sharpeners.. would like to buy something I can use to fix tips, fix the bolster as well as other non knife uses. Want something versatile that I can get belts for and won’t take up a lot of room. won’t get used much and will probably look to buy used

airscapes replied to the topic ? counterfeit 12 inch guide rods . . . . in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 5 years, 4 months ago
Unfortunately the current rods are larger that .250″
The current rods measure (in mm) 6.43mm
The old .250 in rods measure (in mm)6.33mm
It is not a huge difference but it makes for a more accurate fit with the handles.
This is not new news, it has been documented more than a few times in other thread.

No it was not, this is one of 3 knives a friend gave to me to sharpen. He gave me all the knifes they don’t use, once his wife saw he first one come back she was yelling at him for not giving me the ones she uses.. I think they will be coming to me next week.
That edge was probably from his chefs choice knife killer.. He is a hair stylist and…[Read more]

Started on a Cuisinart 8″ chefs knife yesterday which had some chunks out of it. I need to invest in the lower grit stone, using a 100 Grit to clean up the entire 8″ and remove all the damage is very time consuming.
My stone progression is 100,200,400,600,800,1000,1500,6 micron lapping film, all at 20 degrees, then strop 4 2 1 .5 microns at 1.5…[Read more]

Hi Richard! Since I have learned from Marc my advice will sound familiar..
I will do the same up and down strokes with each stone to set the bevel and remove the majority of the previous grits scratches. Then I switch to short (3-4 inch long) edge leading (down and away) over lapping strokes (assuming a chefs knife since I have no folders). So…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic ? counterfeit 12 inch guide rods . . . . in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 5 years, 5 months ago
To make the rod it is machined, leaving tool marks. If you polish the tool marks off the rod will then be under sized. The rods I bought last week have tool marks on them and they make the expected sound when the stone is move over it quickly. You got OEM Rods and saved on the shipping, it’s a win!
Best advice is to buy from WE, even if you…[Read more]

They look like the set I bought from WE a couple weeks ago. Do the handles fit correctly? If so, install them and use them. They do not come with nuts as nuts are not used with the current gen ball joints and the thread does not need to be as long as there are no lock nuts to consume space.

airscapes replied to the topic Grit Progression with Micro Fine Ceramics in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 5 months ago
Which scope do you have?
The one I had linked to does not need to have the knife removed to use. The scope has LED lights in it that are adjustable, you place the nose of the scope against the edge of the blade and move it up or down until the bevel is in view. Then slide it along the length to inspect the entire blade. Photos can be snap…[Read more]

This is just rhetorical; How do you know 50 or 100 strokes is the proper number of stokes to remove the scratches left by the previous grit?
The answer is, if you do not look at the surface of the bevel with a high powered microscope, you really have no idea for sure. You may be doing a lot more work than you need to do or the opposite. Th…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic Another Pennsyltucky Knife Nut! in the forum Welcome Mat 5 years, 5 months ago
I googled it..
Pennsyltucky is a slang portmanteau of the state names Pennsylvania and Kentucky. It is used to characterize—usually humorously, but sometimes deprecatingly—the rural part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania outside the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas, (Including Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area…[Read more]

Wow! You must have Superman eyes cause there is no way in hell you can see the previous scratches compared to the current with a loop.

airscapes replied to the topic Re: the new 2200/3000 stones? in the forum Abrasives 5 years, 5 months ago
Such a service would be silly when all you really need is a USB microscope that will allow you to see and document your results. A 10x loop is insufficient for the task of monitoring you progress between grits in my opinion. I used a 30x before dropping $35 for the scope and there is no comparison on what you can see when you are usin…[Read more]
