depends on how small…for traditionals you will need the tormek small knife jig which holds it by the handle. For most other knives it holds it securely no problem – but I do use a piece of paper towel wrapped around the spine which prevents scratches and assists w/ keeping it steady (not that it necessarily needs it for the latter). The…[Read more]

Looks like a spin off of the WE Go model… of course they are in another country so you can’t really prosecute too well, ugh!

I use a paper towel wrapped around the spine for some traction and to protect the blade. Then what I would try on this particular one is to use paper towel, then get the rear nub of the jaw on the blade flat (near the stud) and the other forward nub wont’ matter, just make sure it’s firmly on the transition point. Then tilt your handle up in the…[Read more]

I normally re-set the edge once to 15 dps, then maintain for a LONG time at 17-19 dps with a microbevel at 600-1k grit. of course, it would depend on what you are going for edge wise =)

No difference in technique – just paste em up and use them. Pressure is relative to the user but I use what I would consider medium force. No care and maintenance other than keeping them free from contamination. Even w/ the strops I will get a random scratch here and there and have to spend extra time stropping until it’s minimized – I spend…[Read more]

Marc,
I’ve tried just about every stropping material out there and prefer/use a nano cloth type material as it’s manufactured very precisely and has the most potential for zero contamination.
I strop down to .25u (quarter micron) and do not decrease the angle at all as the cloth is very thin with almost no give. The small amount of micro…[Read more]

I have had the same experience and I’m confident it’s coming from the films … I’ve tried many different film manufacturers and they are all the same at 1um or less. That’s why I stop at 3.5um and switch to strops down to .25um now.

Good call all the way around! The guys nailed it! I just ordered a 130 for a friend as a gift and he loves it. For a base I set it up with a suction cup vacuum (like a panavise ) as I’m a big fan of that set up. But you are right better to not have to fool with machining to get everything perfect, just buy one and be done with it!

Spyderco definitely, superb products and customer support. ZT are a really great quality, warranty support is decent but hit or miss sometimes. Benchmade has great support and one nice thing about them (and ZT) is that you can purchase a replacement blade on any current models for $30-50 (Spyderco doesn’t do this). Another one to consider, I have…[Read more]

Thanks for chiming in Marc. Yes, in one sense that’s true however it is much more time consuming to go out to my shop and set up to basically sharpen it there then move inside to my WEPS sharpening station to sharpen *again*. Not to mention on the belt sander free-handing it isn’t as precise as I would want and setting up/using a jig on my big…[Read more]

This looks interesting but only works w/ the Foredom flex shaft tool and wouldn’t really be convenient w/ the way it hooks in.
