My suspicion is that the WE strops that I use are accomplishing the same end; removal of the residual burr. I suppose that your wood block method does have an advantage in that there is no risk of rounding the apex, but I wonder if scraping off the burr leaves the edge as clean as can be achieved with stropping. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting. This is the second video in two days that I have seen utilizing one of those testers. Unfortunately, it only gives information about push cutting ability. Is yours the model PT50B or PT50C?

Occasionally they will do a markdown, but this is usually right before or after a revision to the design and is probably an attempt to clear out old stock. It doesn’t happen often.

Interesting. What is your typical grit progression prior to running though the wood block? I am particularly curious if you do any stropping in your progression.

Welcome to the forum MStarmer!
There is essentially no debate that the generation 3 vice is the better design. The older style clamp can natively accommodate a larger range of blade thicknesses, but only very thick knives will be a problem for the newer design and can be handled by purchasing the jaws for thick knives. If you are debating getting…[Read more]

The difference is that one was designed that way and the other was done by mistake. That’s a fancy blade for sure. Are you planning on sharpening it, or are you going to leave the factory edge on this one?

Welcome Blaino!
Bald spots on arms are a dead giveaway of a fellow sharpener. I like to use thin paper that you find in catalogs or phone books to test the sharpness of the knife as I progress. This method has the advantage that you don’t have to take the knife out of the clamp to test the blade, so you can test in between each grit change. If…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic clamping at 15 degrees in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 5 months ago
The low angle adapter can help you get lower angles without hitting the vice. I also really like using the Tormek small knife jig fit this purpose.

Welcome to the forum rummels!
You should check Clay’s thread on the Spyderco Native 2 in maxamet. He measured the scratches on the bevel and found that they were right around the 3 micron size and it looks like it was heavily stropped to a slightly convex bevel at about 16 degrees per side. This is right around the size of scratches that the 1500…[Read more]

Have fun! In a couple of days you’ll be digging through drawers desperately looking for any remaining bladed objects that you can put a new edge onto.

Organic replied to the topic Clay, where is the serrated sharpener? in the forum Suggestion Box 6 years, 5 months ago
I would also love to see WE come out with a universal serration sharpener attachment, but there are such a wide variety of shapes out there that I don’t know if that will ever happen.

Organic replied to the topic 1500 Grit Diamond Stones in the forum Abrasives 6 years, 5 months ago
Marc gave you the philosophical answer and I agree with everything he said. Ultimately, it will be up to you to decide what progression gives you the results you seek.
I will attempt to give you a practical answer. The 1500 grit diamond works very well after the 1000 grit diamond. It can essentially replace the 1200 / 1600 grit ceramics in your…[Read more]

I feel the same way. If someone uses one of my knives they had better comment on how unbelievably sharp it is or I know I haven’t been keeping up on my edge maintenance. It felt pretty good a few weeks ago when my office had a summer kickoff grill luncheon and I brought in my old set of Farberware knives for the veggie prep work. My colleague who…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Sharpening T420 Rada knives in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 6 months ago
My parents have a REALLY cheap set of knives. I think they paid twelve dollars for a twelve piece knife set with block included, so the retailer was still making a profit at under a dollar per knife. I have sharpened them, but the steel rolls so easily that it was just about pointless. The only good thing I was able to accomplish was to remove…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Damn, I really just screwed this edge up? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 6 months ago
One way to avoid unnecessary wear on the medium grit stones while avoiding the deep scratches at the apex is to start off with the coarse stones but intentionally switch grits before reaching the apex. This method requires close monitoring of your sharpening progress with a USB scope. This can allow you to do the majority of the re-profile work…[Read more]
