BIll_NYE, it appears from your photos you have been provided the wrong vise model/version, the one that should have been be shipped with the Gen 3 Pro setup. That wrong vice is flat on the bottom. Oher then the flat base the vises are identical in their functionality.
The vise for your WE130 model is notched to inset and lock into the blue…[Read more]

Yes, the files do work. But what they tell you is purely subjective, and speculative. You’ll make of it what you want. Interpret them as you wish.
Without scientific controls, and standards everything else is strictly academic. Really just a hope or a guess. Open to personal interpretations. When your results and my results differ they’…[Read more]

The functionality of these files as a hardness testing method is purely subjective. The qualitativeness, quantitativeness and accuracy of their resulting hardness readings are closer to “horseshoes and handgrenades” where “a miss is as close as a mile” and doesn’t really mean anything.
Yes HRc 65 is harder than HRc 60, just like $5 is more than…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic New vs Old Granite Base in the forum Main Forum 2 years, 11 months ago
I started many years ago with the Pro-Pack II. Then as W.E. offered new models, versions and design upgrades I tried them, too. As I got deeper into my knife sharpening and knife collecting hobbies I learned the advantages and shortcomings of each of my sharpeners. I customized, modified, adapted and accessorized each setup model to better ac…[Read more]

Yes it’s just like my lighter beige/gold granite. It’s a nice looking piece of stone.

Welcome to the W.E. forum Sharpnew.
Here’s another option for stone storage when portability and an enclosed box aren’t necessary:

SpensiveHabits, welcome to the W.E. forum.
W.E. sells through their inventory and they sell out often, I doubt they have any new old stock.
At one time they offered what was called a paperwood base. I think it was an MDF like product. These bases were a milk chocolate brown color. The paperwood bases were solid, hard and heavy but easily dis…[Read more]

Henry, I believe you have a couple issues going on there…
First, like you said, the diamond stones may not be fully broken-in yet. I think you’ll continue to see further improvement in the resulting scratch patterns with continued use.
Then it appears your technique may need more practice and ultimate improvement. Although it’s a little d…[Read more]

Mike R., it’s all part of the learning curve to using the W.E. well. And yes,, that can be both disappointing and frustrating. Positioning and clamping some knives securely can be very challenging. Especially since there are so many different sizes, shapes and styles of knives. Even after years of sharpening experience with my W.E setu…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum, Terry.
This is a handy adapter many of us use for similar situations. The W.E. Low Angle Adapter is another helpful accessory.

Marc H replied to the topic resin bonded diamond stones? in the forum Abrasives 2 years, 12 months ago
Yes, the Resin-bonded Diamond Matrix Stones are still in my arsenal. I can’t report any more details than I already posted earlier in this thread.
These Resin-Bonded Diamond Matrix stones have their pros and cons:
Pros:
- they don’t have any real break-in
- they don’t shed diamond dust like the W.E. stones do (during beak-in)
- they work…

Don’t misunderstand me. The clarity is there with this scope. When used properly, you’ll be able see the edge damage, defects and it’s condition when first clamping up the knife to decide your plan of attack. You’ll be able to see damage as small as pin point size chips and scratches.
Once I get started, for me, it’s all about my progress t…[Read more]

Just for inspecting knife edges for condition and sharpening progress the polarizing feature is really unnecessary. Your not really examining the steel. Your scanning the bevel to see the effectiveness of your technique to lay down scratch patterns.
The least expensive scope I ever purchased is still my go-to favorite. It’s simpler and les…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic I finally got the mirror edge. Happy WE user in the forum Knife Photos 3 years ago
Alex, I believe about a 3° to 5° bevel profile difference is where a discernable cutting difference is recognizable. I suggest a noticeable improvement in the cutting quality indicates there’s been quite a change, made.
An objective accurate sharpness tester is really needed to quantify an edge’s sharpness. Testing an edge before and after sha…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Inconsistent bevel in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years ago
For knives with bevels that are inconsistent or indiscernable the Wicked Edge is used to profile the knife edge to bevel angles of your choice.
A bevel angle is chosen that is appropriate for the knife’s use, size, design and steel type. You may be able to research the knives on internet for their specs. The W.E. is then set up to that angle o…[Read more]

Alex your pretty much on track with sharpening results and outcomes many new W.E. user’s seem to follow if they’reserious about it.
The process seems to go sort of like this…since, you now have the W.E. knife sharpeners you can position and clamp a knife rigidly, stationary and predictably. These fixed angle sharpeners then let us sharpen our…[Read more]

First I ever heard of this “Gunny Juice” product. I do prefer the W.E. Spray diamond emulsions to the W.E. strop pastes. The feel of the emulsion products when stropping is improved, (smoother), along with the improved ease of application and the longevity on the leather while using. The paste are dryer when attempting application and they mor…[Read more]
