I know, been there done that! BUT, if I’m not mistaken, the end game is whether or not knife will do the job at hand, not if it has a pristine edge at some god awful magnification.
I have a kitchen knife that I sharpened on my Wicked Edge two or three years ago. Since then I hone it with a steel every few days. It will still cut a to…[Read more]

Timm the “Hot Glue” did not hold up to the “Neatsfoot Oil” that I use on the “Kangaroo Strops”, I replaced the Hot Glue with “Flex Glue”.
When I test the edge on the “Bess PT50A” the “Tungsten Carbide” dose improve sharpness.
I no longer “steel” with the same angle as the sharpening stones, I go just “hair” more acute or steeper angle, but that…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Gen 3 Pro Vise Tension in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 2 years, 9 months ago
With the originally released versions of the Gen 3 cam action vise the vise sides were open exposing the cam itself. That version also used a classic spring for tension. For that version it was prudent to tape up the sides to keep the action clean and free. The newer Gen 3 vise versions, released since then, have a redesigned vise body that is…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Scratching up the blade!! Help in the forum Main Forum 2 years, 9 months ago
For loose abrasives that haven’t come free yet, I’d use a dry nylon scrub brush and a shop vac or compressed air. The pronounced shedding will stop soon as the stones get better broken in.

Marc H replied to the topic Scratching up the blade!! Help in the forum Main Forum 2 years, 9 months ago
Scratches are commonly seen with new systems. Several issues can contribute to them. First, newer stones just getting broken in tend to shed loose abrasives with use. New stones can be messy and will get better in short order. As your working the edge the loose stones can be dragged across the knife side steel. The loose abrasives can may get…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic The Gen. 3 Pro vs. The Commercial Model in the forum Main Forum 2 years, 10 months ago
Ken both the Commercial Series and the Gen 3 Pro use the same vise and similar mechanics for the angle adjustments. About the only differences between the two models are:
- the Commercial Series has the full blue heavier aluminum top deck and enclosed cabinet. The Gen 3 Pro has a partial blue half round top deck plate, and the stone cabinet s…

An alternate method would be to place a shim of sorts between the knife handle and the Tormek holder on the right side of the knife handle in order to shift the knife blade back to the left as the holder centers the widened handle. A wooden paint stirring stick might work well for the shim.

Marc H replied to the topic Antique pen/quill knife angles? in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 2 years, 10 months ago
Edge leading strokes are done by bringing the stones down and onto, or down and against the knife edge. Apex down to bevel shoulder.
Edge trailing strokes are done by raising the stones up and then off the knife edge, or up and away. Bevel shoulder up to the apex then off the edge.
Both of these strokes, edge leading, and edge trailing st…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Antique pen/quill knife angles? in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 2 years, 10 months ago
I recommend you should always start with wide angles. This creates a short height bevel. The sharpness is a factor of how smooth the bevels are and how closely and precisely the two bevels intersect, the keeness. Edge keeness translates to sharpness. Sheffield steel is high carbon steel. It can get very sharp but it’s not a particularly har…[Read more]

Timm, before you can sharpen a narrow or short height knife like this one you first have to find a secure method to clamp it in the W.E. vise. Otherwise, your sharpening stones will contact the vise and not allow the stones to reach the apex.
Here is a W.E. video dealing with this issue with a couple…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum Iceshiver. There are so many different grinds in knives, in general. In Japanese knives that’s taken even further with all the specialized artisan knife styles and grinds. Timm, welcome to the WE Forum. Congratulations on your first success.
Just so you know it generally takes about 10 knives worth of sharpening for the stones to first get broken-in and yield better and more consistent sharpening results. The finer the grits lessss wear is required to break them in.

Eric, I didn’t realize you’ve already used your stones with 25 knives. I would expect that would be enough knives to break in your stones well. Possibly your rough blade results may simply be that you hadn’t apexed the knife edges, evidenced by a noticeable burr, or you didn’t sharpen the knives long enough or with a correct te…[Read more]

To try to explain in simple terms, the Wicked Edge sharpeners are simple bench vises designed to clamp our knives stationary and securely, edge up. This allow us to work both sides of the knives simultaneously without the need to hold the knife. We sharpen our knives by removing steel from the knife sides and up to the knife edge, the apex, at…[Read more]
