Marc H replied to the topic Model Recommendation in the forum Wicked Edge GO 6 years ago
Every model W.E. has the same capacity to sharpen a knife just as well; sharp and polished. The more expensive models include more user adjustibility features for increased user control, and allow you to sharpen knives easier with their more advanced clamping systems. The more expensive models generally include a wider variety of sharpening a…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, Patrick. I suggest you read “The Wicked Edge Shopper’s and Buyer’s Guide: Fall 2018”, forum thread. It’s the top post on the “Recent” forum page. There’s a lot of helpful information compiled there along with some of the history behind the different Wicked Edge models and their evolution and de…[Read more]

I made a similar Extra Large Advanced Alignment Guide, (XLAAG), from a store bought large plastic ruler. I made holes to fit the depth key just as you would with the regular W.E. AAG. I do line it up with the vise, (vertical) and jaws, (horizontal) and place a piece of blue tape to maintain this orientation. I’m able to get an (X,Y) for the ti…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic we 130 vice clicking noise in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 6 years ago
Duke, I find my vises may get a little noisy or sticky with a lot of use, over time. I just do what you did, and break them down and clean and lubricate the parts with a dry wax lubricant suitable for bicycle chains and derailleurs. I use the same lubricant on the guide rod ball ends after wiping them clean with a dry towel. This I do simpl…[Read more]

AlRon22, It is OK to sharpen any knife in any clamping orientation that allows you secure and safe sharpening of the knife edge. If the resulting bevel size and shape is what you desire, suitable for your sharpening needs, the results appears to your liking, and your clamping position gives you the access and ability to sharpen your knife, th…[Read more]

These Wicked Edge Stone storage racks and others models can be custom made to your specific needs. I do still make the original table-top “Rack-Its” and the newer “Modular and Hybrid Rack-Its”.

I personally sharpen evey knife the same…to achieve as sharp an edge as I can. I haven’t found the need to sharpen an edge for specific duties. That’s not to say others don’t do this.
You might try to sharpen your knife and not strop the edge for the edge you feel would serve you better, toothy. For those polished edge duties, strop the ed…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Adding base to the WE130 in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 6 years ago
RJ, you can do this two ways. You can order and pay for the blue base that’s standard with the WE130. Then you’ll remove the wide black portable base option, swap the square bar over to the blue base then re-secure your WE130 Vise to the blue base. The blue base will attach and screw in place, to the pre-drilled holes on the Wicked Edge Al…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic How to introduce the youngsters into the family in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years ago
There’s no special treatment. Just give time, time. They’ll take on average 10 or more knives to start to come around. I have this same, as you call it, “blended family dynamic”. I thought I had the new stones broken in, but they still don’t give the smoother more consistent results of the older stones. Especially the coarser grits that…[Read more]

For the new users with limited experience, with a W.E sharpener or knife sharpening, in general, drawing a burr is the quickest, simplest and most reliable method to determine your work is reaching the knife edge, (i.e., apexing the edge), without having and using other helpful tools. Once you gain some experience and employ alternate monitoring…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Acoustic Sensing in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years ago
Wouldn’t the sound produced by each grit used, on the same knife and the same angle differ, also? Would you need a standardized or control sound signature record to compare against? Wouldn’t this signature differ even with the same knife and the same angle if clamped slightly differently, each time. It think the steel would resonate di…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Next set of stones… in the forum Getting Started 6 years ago
Steven, what is you’re end goal? Sharp or polished?
The 1500 grit is a great diamond stone. The results are a very fine and even scratch pattern resulting in that extra fine edge both in sharpness and shine. It’s both a good ending point for the other grits in the diamond stone progression and a good starting point for the Diamond lapping fi…[Read more]

Consistency in particle size and scratch pattern is very important to me. I do not want stray deep or large scratches, if avoidable.
