I did research it. I didn’t find a single source that suggested anything finer then 1000 grit

I look at that knife as though its a gentle curve from tip to heel. I try to clamp it centered in the curve.
I imagine a line between the knife’s tip and knife edge right at the heel. Then I clamp the knife roughly centered, to the curved edge, fore and aft while I rotate the handle slightly down.
For the 14.5° angle setting you seek, I’d c…[Read more]

A wider photo, from further away, so we could see how the knife is clamped in the vise, would be helpful.
A knife that’s clamped, positioned higher in the jaws will allow the end brackets with the guide rods to be position on the square bar further out and away from the vise/knife center-line, to achieve the same angle setting. Because of Pythago…[Read more]

Through my personal experiences over years of involvement with this forum I’ve observed most everyone of us is a perfectionist or at least highly critical and detail oriented. Most W.E. users look first towards our new prized sharpeners for issues resulting in our sharpening disappointments. I had the expectation that all I had to do was cl…[Read more]

IMO: There should be no “and not damage” in the equation! If there was any chance I lacked the confidence, ability or skill to sharpen any knives presented to me well, without inflicting damage to them, I’d stay out the sharpening business for now and keep practicing.

0.3º variation is PDG. Most of us who end up here with a W.E. are OCD and perfectionists.
I submit to you if you intend to profile the bevels to 15.00º and the knife ends up in reality at 14.70º or 15.30º it doesn’t mean the knife suddenly stops cutting. It’ll cut just fine and it’ll look just the same. You won’t feel any difference as long a…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge forum, The Dutchman, GJHM28.
Kindly accept my constructive criticism:
I see from your photos provided that you have inserted a large diameter washer between the hexed thumb wheel jam lock and the rubber dust boot. You have positioned the hex nut side of the jam wheel so it is oriented inward towards the extra…[Read more]

Consistency becomes really important using this device.
Where you place the cube against your stones, how high or how low on the stone. Then how your stones are placed while leaning against the knife edge. Again, how high or how low the stone is relative to the apex. Are you holding the stone in that position? If so, with how much finger pr…[Read more]

I think that the order you thought you’d use is the way I’d likely go. I always prefer to finish any sharpening progression with strops. The balsa strop doesn’t compress much so it’s more like a sharpening stone in compressibility with the burnishing effect of strop compounds.

Mark, I use chamois both to protect the knife steel and to help improve clamping. I would expect both a knife and the square, to clamp securely and not twist, roll or rotate (tip up or tip down), in the jaws with out much more applied pressure than what is normally used during sharpening. I like to use the square for the reason you…[Read more]

Mark, to be sure, the data you provided in the written response is not so simple for me to follow and picture in my mind. A sketch with the measured angles referenced would certainly be easier to follow. I wouldn’t want to be the one to make that sketch, though.
From what I followed, it does seem the measured angle variations are not u…[Read more]

Steve, I find that a ‘burr” forms with each and every grit I use. No matter how fine the grit. Even with sub-µ lapping films, if my stone set angles remain precise and consistent and my stone work is done well and thoroughly, I get a ‘burr”. Albeit possibly a tiny one. It may even require a high powered USB scope to see it.
For me the “bur…[Read more]

Mark, welcome to the W. E. forum.
The WE130 with it’s floating jaws and cam action, single lever locking vise should be self centering and lock your knives near vertically. From what you are describing it suggests your assessment and follows the logic, that the knife is indeed, leaning.
The problem is, the taller bevel is associated with a…[Read more]

While breaking in your stones, on knives, you are also learning how to use the W.E and to sharpen knives, also. It takes about the same time to break in your stones well as it takes to learn how to sharpen knives.
