Tom,
Finally got around to trying your method for a convex edge. I started at 20 Deg with angle cube , 20.5 Deg Detent on Gen 3 Pro. I tried it on a cheap brand knife a Home 360 5″ slicer. I am very pleased with the result, was disappointed that i didn’t have any Tomatoes to slice though!!!! It does slice paper very well. Only thing i did…[Read more]

Tom, I would be interested in how you did your Micro Adj mod. Nice video on your steps for a convex edge, thanks!
I dont know if its an illusion or not, but it appears to me that the knife shifted in the clamp. Like the heel was shifted downward.later in the video.

William,
I have used electrical shrink tubing on some knives that have slipped with chamois. Also double sided tape layered might work for good adhesion also.
Sometimes i have to mount a knife above the top holes, but still enough in the clamp to hold the knife. With the AAG its easy to record the position. Hope you find something that works.

Welcome Watchdog,
We are almost neighbors! I am from Northern MD. You dont have to order a specific Pro pack. I know the Propack III is pricey, but the Gen 3 vise is worth getting IMO. You can call WE and put together a system with the Gen 3 vise and only hones and accessories you want. Good Luck with whatever you decide to get, it’s a great system!

Wiiliam,
Wow those are some deep scratches, and i believe some chipping also. How much pressure are you using while sharpening, (i use very light pressure). Also are you making sure you are removing previous hones scratch pattern before moving onto next grit?

I decided to do my Delica in ZDP189 to a mirror finish with all of my stropping media, but i couldn’t use my leather strops because they would hit the vise jaws when i raised the angle by 2 deg. So this was sharpened at 18 deg from 400-1500 diamonds, 12001600 ceramics, 1.4u.6u ceramics, 6u DLF – .1u DLF. Really would have liked to get the lea…[Read more]

What do you guys think is the ultimate setupprogression for an insanely smooth polished edge
I have all the DLF’s, but was wondering if the Polycrystalline Emulsions, Polycrystalline Diamonds Sprays on Kangaroo leather would be used instead of the DLF’s
My usual progression is up to 1500 diamonds-6u DLF
1200-1600 Ceramics
1.4u-.6u…[Read more]

Welcome Matt,
Hope you enjoy your sharpening journey. Practice on many cheap knives before attempting something that has meaning to you, so you get your rhythm, feel for the system, break those hones in. They will only get better with use, then you will really get awesome finished edges.

I used a Plano 3744 FlipSider Tackle Box 3700 Size (4 5/8″ Deep). Used a Dremel to cutout slots for the corners of the Platens to fit in

Use an electric engraver with a mini bit to etch the grit size back on. Or a Dremel.

Wanted to purchase a Santoku style knife, but didn’t want to spend a fortune so that eliminated quite a few from consideration.
It came down to these two, Messermeister, Dalstrong. I already have some Messremeister’s so am pleased with their quality. Also was not sure if I wanted Grantons on the knife either, so i went with the Messermeister. My…[Read more]

Drew,
Have never seen anyone use it wet, don’t think it would be a good idea. The rpm is low when sharpening so not much heat buildup.
Check YouTube for demo on its use, with the Blade Grinding attachment

Pinkfloyd replied to the topic First WE, Ultimate WE in the forum Main Forum 6 years, 7 months ago
Have you also considered a Ken Onion Work Sharp with the Blade Grinder attachment for very quick work before finish sharpening. I am not suggesting to replace the WE, just to handle the really badly chipped, damaged knives, finish sharpening with the WE.
The 5080 hones do work quick, they will also wear out quicker
Don’t know if you will have…[Read more]

I agree with Organic about considering the WE130, you don’t have to worry so much about the cant of a blade as you do with WE100WE120 clamps. I think the micro adjust (on the WE120WE130) is a must for easy and quick adjustments for matching angles, especially when changing hones because of the varying thickness of each hone makes for easy…[Read more]
