Lay, the Shun Premier line is very nice. I sharpened my sister-in-laws Shun Premier knives on my WE with no problems at all. Like Marc said, the are 16 DPS bevel angles.

I’m pretty new to the WE, but wonder how you know you are maintaining the apex if you aren’t creating a burr with each stone progression. Shouldn’t the primary apex be maintained through the sharpening progression? Someone please explain primary bevel/apex vs. a micro bevel and advantages or disadvantages of each.

Can you explain the thinking behind getting the apex only on the primary bevel?

Well Pat, I could have spent $$ on a new chair, but for $2.00 worth on bolts and nuts I lowered the Gen 3 Pro. I can easily put the shelves back under it if I wished. And, it hasn’t changed anything about how the Gen 3 Pro sharpens knives, but has helped keep my back from hurting so bad.

Rumor has it that WE is coming out with an adapter kit to lower the Gen 3 Pro, but it hasn’t been seen yet. You could do like others here, myself included and go to your local hardware store and pick up the necessary hardware and lower it yourself. Easy job.

Which Edge-On-Up Sharpness Tester model is recommended? There are three models. Which model is the preferred model for accurate testing?

I used my micro angle adjustments that I got from Ed today and they work great on my Gen 3 Pro. I found making small adjustment in the angles of the stones much easier and they never moved after tightening the knobs. Thanks to everyone that continue to come up with ideas to improve an already great sharpening system.

Well I finished a knife this morning and started on another. By noon, my back was hurting pretty bad. Sent Clay a PM but haven’t heard back from him. Looks like a conversion kit would be a popular item. I want one yesterday. 😆

Well, if it will keep my back from hurting, I’m ready to convert! I would like to be able to enjoy this hobby and not hurt every time I use the Gen 3 Pro. Not sure how to email you Clay. What email address? Or PM?

Well, I’m not sure if it’s the height of the Gen 3 Pro or what, but after my first attempt at sharpening yesterday afternoon, I had a heck of a back ache right between my shoulders running up the back of my neck. Will removing the storage shelf and lowering the unit down help with this? I’ve seen many pics and videos where people had done this…[Read more]

Tommie replied to the topic Guide rod lengths. in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 3 months ago
Well I just attempted my first knife this afternoon. It was a cheap Paula Deens slicer that we bought for our fifth wheel camper. I have several more of these to practice on. Sharpened at 20 degrees trying to use all the information I’ve gathered here. Took a while to get a burr formed and then progressed all the way to 3 micron glass.
Its s…[Read more]

What is the preferred/recommended guide rod length? I have the 8″ that came with my Gen 3 Pro and I also purchased the 10″ and 12″ guide rods. Is there one length that seems to work in most all situations or is it a constant game of changing the rods for different knives? The 10″ seems to be a good do most anything length to me.
