Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic oops, WE130 won't work on one of my knifes in the forum Main Forum 3 years, 3 months ago
Mike R., it’s all part of the learning curve to using the W.E. well. And yes,, that can be both disappointing and frustrating. Positioning and clamping some knives securely can be very challenging. Especially since there are so many different sizes, shapes and styles of knives. Even after years of sharpening experience with my W.E setu…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum, Terry.
This is a handy adapter many of us use for similar situations. The W.E. Low Angle Adapter is another helpful accessory.

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic resin bonded diamond stones? in the forum Abrasives 3 years, 3 months ago
Yes, the Resin-bonded Diamond Matrix Stones are still in my arsenal. I can’t report any more details than I already posted earlier in this thread.
These Resin-Bonded Diamond Matrix stones have their pros and cons:
Pros:
- they don’t have any real break-in
- they don’t shed diamond dust like the W.E. stones do (during beak-in)
- they work…

Don’t misunderstand me. The clarity is there with this scope. When used properly, you’ll be able see the edge damage, defects and it’s condition when first clamping up the knife to decide your plan of attack. You’ll be able to see damage as small as pin point size chips and scratches.
Once I get started, for me, it’s all about my progress t…[Read more]

Just for inspecting knife edges for condition and sharpening progress the polarizing feature is really unnecessary. Your not really examining the steel. Your scanning the bevel to see the effectiveness of your technique to lay down scratch patterns.
The least expensive scope I ever purchased is still my go-to favorite. It’s simpler and les…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic I finally got the mirror edge. Happy WE user in the forum Knife Photos 3 years, 4 months ago
Alex, I believe about a 3° to 5° bevel profile difference is where a discernable cutting difference is recognizable. I suggest a noticeable improvement in the cutting quality indicates there’s been quite a change, made.
An objective accurate sharpness tester is really needed to quantify an edge’s sharpness. Testing an edge before and after sha…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Inconsistent bevel in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 4 months ago
For knives with bevels that are inconsistent or indiscernable the Wicked Edge is used to profile the knife edge to bevel angles of your choice.
A bevel angle is chosen that is appropriate for the knife’s use, size, design and steel type. You may be able to research the knives on internet for their specs. The W.E. is then set up to that angle o…[Read more]

Alex your pretty much on track with sharpening results and outcomes many new W.E. user’s seem to follow if they’reserious about it.
The process seems to go sort of like this…since, you now have the W.E. knife sharpeners you can position and clamp a knife rigidly, stationary and predictably. These fixed angle sharpeners then let us sharpen our…[Read more]

A second video in this series has been released to W.E. subscribers:

I want to add there is a subtle difference between “finding the sweet spot” and “determining the bevel angle(s)”. The process is roughly the same. First it’s best to use the marker test to position the knife for clamping in i…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Gunny Juice Emulsions? in the forum Abrasives 3 years, 4 months ago
First I ever heard of this “Gunny Juice” product. I do prefer the W.E. Spray diamond emulsions to the W.E. strop pastes. The feel of the emulsion products when stropping is improved, (smoother), along with the improved ease of application and the longevity on the leather while using. The paste are dryer when attempting application and they mor…[Read more]

Keep at it James. When you see your edges are improving, you’re on the right track. Don’t be afraid to use each grit thoroughly before moving on to the next finer grit stone. More time and effort with each stone is far better than not enough. When in doubt, more is better. You can’t overdo it. Consistency, effort and attention to detail…[Read more]

Kjosn, I always finish every knife I sharpen with at least the 4µ/2µ strop pair. This gives me a good balance between sharpness, smoothness and polish.

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Sharpening Angle in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 5 months ago
With the knife positioned as you have it, with the midpoint centered in the vise, try rotating the tip up and the handle down as the spine stays resting on the rear pin only of the depth key. Rotate the tip up just slightly then repeat the sharpie test as you zero in on the right amount of rotation.

Matt H, welcome to the W.E. forum.
In general, yes a gouge on a 1500 grit diamond stone is not good. It’s hard to see what we’re being shown in your close-up magnified phot. Could you send another photo? Just a regular closeup photo with a wider view.
A “gouge” is a low spot that created when the flat surface is scooped out. I’d think tha…[Read more]
