Just sharing, I rigged up a half round diamond file (grit 100-200) to a WEPS paddle to try and reprofile my small serrated knife. There are 25 serrations and the knife must be moved each time to center (by eye) each serration. I used the height key as a guide and kept the knife touching it at each move. Angle is 18 deg, single sided serration. It…[Read more]

IMO, “changing” the position of the blade during WEPS sharpening in order to tweak the bevels diminishes what the WEPS gives you (manual repeatable perfection surpassed only by CNC fixturing/machining). “Changing” dictates metallic blending which while sounds/looks good violates the elegance of continous linearity. IMO, this is what WEPS is…[Read more]

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I suppose then we should ease off on the pressure as we “travel” thru the belly and tip if we want to approach perfect repeatable “symmetry”. I wonder if my accoustic digital pickup would yield useable feedback.</p>

Readheads replied to the topic Clay, where is the serrated sharpener? in the forum Suggestion Box 6 years, 6 months ago
This is a very difficult challenge without fancy digital alignment equipment. Each serration is actually a mini knife of its own and usually concave curved. I have seen some convex though. I have thought about a WEPS approach for years (it helps me fall asleep – LOL). The WEPS simple elegance (using geometric advantages) to put repeatable perfect…[Read more]

IMO, the best you can do on serrated is sharpen the tip but only if they are the “flat” tip type. The geometry of the scallops can really only be matched if you have the original equipment of the OEM. There are various youtube videos showing approaches but they are freehand and use diamond cone type rods. I’ve also seen them done using the edge of…[Read more]

You could try something like the attached. I use it for flexible knives but I’m sure it can open more than 1/4″. You probably would want to do a slight bend on the top long edge of both sides to maximize sufficient clamping surface area. It cost me $8.99

Did you attempt to redo the edge on the entire (1/2 inch) primary bevel or just do a secondary bevel ? I got an Aritsugu Deba last year and thought it would be nice to establish a WEPS profile on the entire primary but found it pretty much impossible without doing a massive amount of WEPS work. Finding a mount position to get close enough to the…[Read more]

- why would that be necessary ? Right now the 2 plates are clamped together at the WEPS, the mounted knife thickness forces a spread and the 2 screws counteract the spread for a super tight grip on the knife. I think you may be ablr to do a single screw in the center with a minimal wing to welded nut cause the plates are slightly bowed.

You could spot weld on a mut. Where wou you put it.

Actually, you may be on to something. One thing WEPS cannot do is serrated knives (ie. the scallops). Each scallop is essentially a seperate knife. Each individual scallop has to be orthogonal to the sharpening motion. If you were to incorporate the Lansky slots into a WEPS setup you might have the best of both for serrated knives. Of course you…[Read more]

Just finished my mod, I can now go to 12 DPS with no flex, $8.99, what a deal.
Thanks to PapaL !!

Phenominal ! This is the simplest method I have seen to date to solve the flexing issue on thin kitchen knives. I am heading to Home Depot now to get the parts. Exactly what brand is the “white film static cling” ?

I have more than that invested in my WEPS. And if I want to do major reprofile/repair on a blade it takes forever on WEPS and will wear out my diamond handles faster. This machine can also handle serrated knives using the techniques of the “Patron of Saint of Knives”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPy84c_ie0g
I plan on having a few di…[Read more]

An interesting option for grinding really messed up edges prior to going on WEPS. It has a really quiet DC variable speed motor from 400 RPM to 4000 RPM. I called them and you can get the base unit (without the 2 diamond wheels) plus the belt sander attachment for ~$1,200. I would then get a set of buffer/leather wheels for the other side. Sm…[Read more]

Again, I am not trying to sharpen, just want to clean up a “bad” chippy profile before WEPS with a good full length burr which can take 20 mins on WEPS.

I am looking for something I can use for fixing big dings, dishes and major re-profiling relatively quickly and then putting the knife on WEPS to put on the perfect finished edge. I would want to use it at pop-up knife sharpening locations for a part time retirement job. I figure if I can handle anything they throw at me then I can be successful…[Read more]

I want to supplement my WEPS with a variable speed belt sander for reprofiling quickly. The ones that the knife makers use seem to be overkill and the $100 models are not really appropriate (not variable speed, lack fixturing, etc). I looked at the Ken Onion types and would prefer a more rigid stand type.
What do you all use ?

Readheads replied to the topic Blade alignment in the clamp: sweet spot & constant bevel angle/width in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 11 months ago
I put a solid straight edge in the clamp and did a 30 deg tilt and tried to use the angle cube to verify the angle variation. Even though I kept the cube plumb I still got angle variations and I think it is due to another plumbness type issue of not being 90 deg to the edge similar to the video below using a pretty cool phone…[Read more]

I think sharpened or not sharpened a perfectly straight knife would show the same angle measurement whether tilted or not. It is that counterintuitive brainstretching thing (due to cone circles, et al) that was half part of the start of this topic. I know I took some measurements once on this but let me try again. The thing is I need a piece of…[Read more]
