Organic replied to the topic Kershaw "Lifter" 1302BW Recurve/Tanto in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 6 years, 10 months ago
I think you’ll get the best results by treating the tanto and the part with the belly as two separate blades. If you try to do them both in one go you risk rounding the point where they intersect. The recurve on this is not very dramatic so it should be no problem. I have dealt successfully with similar amounts of recurve.

Man, that video reminded me of how thankful I am that the WE diamond plates don’t require honing oil. That stuff is messy.

You’ve received some great answers to your questions. Regarding the knife not feeling as sharp as you progress through the girts: Like Clay said, a toothy edge does feel very sharp to your fingers because there are microscopic serrations all along the apex. This can be exactly what you want if you are cutting fibrous substances like rope and zip…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Choosing a Japanese knife. in the forum Knife Specific Discussion 6 years, 10 months ago
Given the budget, I would second Marc’s recommendation of the 210mm Tojiro DP. I haven’t owned one personally, but they are highly regarded as solidly preforming knives and a great value.
Another option in this price range is the Tojiro ITK. This knife has shirogami high carbon steel and is not stainless, so it will require extra care to prevent…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Max length on WE130 in the forum Sharpening as a Business 6 years, 10 months ago
Based on your title I’m guessing you’re curious about the maximum blade length that the Wicked Edge can handle. Clay has demonstrated blades up to 17 inches, but I am fairly certain you can do larger blades if you get the 12 inch guide rods that are listed in the accessory section of the Wicked Edge site.
With the exception of a few specialty…[Read more]

Welcome Josh-L!
Clay used to be a field guide and has sharpened a lot of hunting knives. You might check out his advice in this old thread. Here’s another one as well. Let us know how it works out.

I was saddened to hear of Mark’s passing and have been thinking about him all day today. I didn’t know him other than through this forum, but we’re a pretty small community and I have been reading his interactions with us nearly daily for the last two or so years. He was always friendly in his posts, eager to help, and just seemed like a very kind…[Read more]

FYI, Josh of Razor Edge Knives says that he gets about 400 knives worth of sharpening per set of WE stones.

Organic replied to the topic Controversial (Touch-up) Strop in the forum Stropping 6 years, 10 months ago
I totally agree that you simply can not beat the precision of the WE for stropping, but a fixed angle stropping setup like I described would be really convenient for quick touch ups of knives. In fact, I bet it would be pretty easy to make a set of triangular dowels that fit the Sharpmaker slots. You could then mount leather to each of the three…[Read more]

Here’s an interesting idea; Make a fixed angle stropping setup similar to the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It seems like that cold be easily done and would allow for good control of the stropping angle without the need for a clamp.

Great review!
My question is this; where are you coming up with all of these knives to sharpen? 300 blades in less than a year is a very high volume for someone who does not sharpen for money. I’m guessing everyone on your street has wicked sharp knives 🙂

The answers you have received already are correct, but I figure it is sometimes nice to have it written another way to make it easier to understand.
Before you begin sharpening, examine the bevels to see if they are of equal width on both sides of the knife. If they are uneven, work the smaller side until the bevels are even. Then, work both…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Chef’s knife w/ convex factory grind (Mac Mighty) in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 6 years, 11 months ago
Is it possible that the micro bevel that is on the knife was in fact put on by the use of the ceramic hone used to maintain the knife? It seems like a reasonable explanation to me.

You can always sharpen it as a convex again if that’s how you like it. Check out the knowledge base article.

Hi Jake and welcome to the forum.
I don’t own any of the ceramic stones, just the diamonds from 100 to 1500 and then some lapping films and strops. Clay has shown that the 1500 grit diamond stones do a superb job of removing the 1000 grit scratches and you can go straight from the 1500 grit to the lapping films (see this thread for a detailed…[Read more]

I don’t have any experience with the GO, so I’m not quite sure how to help you. I would suggest that you contact Wicked Edge directly. Their customer service is top notch.
