Marc H replied to the topic 2200/3000 Diamond stones in the forum Abrasives 5 years, 3 months ago
Patrick, the grit size and size comparisons described for W.E. stones were originally made by visually observing the scratch depth, width and space between those scratches with a high powered microscope with distance measuring capabilities. The sizes as described are comparitive measurements done from grit to grit. How they relate to the visual…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Gen 3 question on uneven ground blades in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 3 months ago
Pat, if you find a balance between the Gen 3 Pros central lever angle adjuster’s position and each side’s individual angle adjuster, when using the mods, I’m sure you’ll be able to adjust for the different angles seen on each side of a uneven bevel or asymmetrically ground knife, for most situations; 60/40 and 70/30 uneven bevels. The exception…[Read more]

In the same scope of discussion as “Organic ” presents I also think besides steel dependence we also have the sharpening medium to consider. For those harder more chip prone steels I find the whetstone sharpening mediums more effective to sharpen these steels. I utilize the scrubbing strokes, just the same with the whetstones, with much less c…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Gen 3 question on uneven ground blades in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 3 months ago
Pat, yes that is a shortcoming of the Gen 3 Pro model. A work- around that may help is accessorize with a micro-angle adjuster mod offered by Ed K, forum member “NotSharpEnuff”. This modification increases the angle adjustment range for each side’s individual angle adjustment on the Gen 3 Pro. It may help with some uneven bevel knives, if the…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Cheese Knife in the forum Welcome Mat 5 years, 3 months ago
Michael, after doing a little reading up on the web what makes a good cheese knife, nothing indicates sharpness as a needed quality. I found that different style knives are used with different cheeses. That being said, I’d probably start simply with a strop on your knife. I’d expect refining and smoothing the edge will probably help cont…[Read more]

A scrubbing stroke is the first stroke I utilize with each grit I use in my sharpening regimen. I have not experienced any downside in using it.

Marc H replied to the topic Machete knife can I sharpen? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 3 months ago
Very long knives, like your machette example, may be too long to sharpen them all at once and may need to be repositioned and sharpened in sections. I think a good approximation of the overall length that you can reach efficiently with the W.E. is 1-1/2 × the guide rod length. So, with an 8″ guide rod, you should be able to sharpen a 12″ or 13″…[Read more]

The soft more compressible nature of the strops and since the abrasive compound is simply applied to the surfaces and not permanently adhered contributes to the difference in the polishing behavior of strops vs the sharpening behavior of the lapping films. The abrasives can slide and roll across the strop mediums giving them their polishing or…[Read more]

Kris, to be sure you purchase the correct diameter guide rods to match your particular version WE100, I suggest you stick with W.E. for that particular accessory. You probably should order them via a phone call to be sure you get what you need.
I too have purchased many accessories from Bob at Oldawan with never a single problem. Bob has al…[Read more]

Kris, first of all welcome to the W.E. Forum.
IMO it is more about your technique. I believe, by trying to follow the length of the knife as it curves down at the tip there is the inadvertent tendency to pull the strop down and onto the knife edge while doing that. To avoid this, break down your stropping strokes into shorter sections of the k…[Read more]

Here’s some reading to help you understand the science behind your question, (It’s a two part paper):

Any adapter, (L.A.A., Riser Block, or Tormek SKA), that will allow you to achieve a lower bevel angle setting will help, but each has their own challenges and…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Can/will Gen 3 Pro Clamp damage blade coating? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 3 months ago
I regularly use real leather chamois between the knife blade and the vise jaws. I cut a small rectangular patch that I wrap up around the knife sides to protect the blade when clamped in the jaws. Sometimes once the knife is positioned and clamped securely, I will need to trim off excess chamois cloth that hangs out the top of the jaws and h…[Read more]

SDMF74, I have used the older larger “L” brackets that you have with the locking screw against the adjuster screw threads. I have also used the newest mini “L” brackets with the knurled thumb wheel locking system. Both these locking systems have their good and bad points. Nonetheless the WEPS models are the the heart of this fine precision kni…[Read more]

I had forgotten the design of the locking mechanism for micro-angle adjuster screws on the newest version Gen 3 Pro model. That it is comprised of a two screw set-up that locks the angle adjustment position by the physical contact within the threaded holes in the black end bracket between the screw’s flat end of the inside ball end adjuster…[Read more]

Ed’s micro-angle adjusters are a great way to go. They work very well and eliminate the problem.
For the WE120s or WE130s, if you want to try an inexpensive fix that may do the trick, you might try buying a fishing reel drag washer at a Fishing Bait and Tackle Shop that repairs fishing reels. Try to place a drag washer on the angle adj…[Read more]

I just finished this 24 post “Rack-It”. This is called the “Rigid Hybrid” model. It works just the same sitting flat on the sharpening work top or it mounts on the wall by integrated supported hangers. It was designed for those with limited work space or just wanting to be able to hang it up out of the way. This is a good size for those use…[Read more]
