airscapes replied to the topic Digital angle measurement in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 11 months ago
If a stone stop is used to hold the stone so the center of the stone is in contact with the bevel the measurement will be the same each time as the stone sits the way it will when it is sliding

One last thought on the OPs issue with the LAA being loose.. Could the installed Jaws be the set made to clamp knives that are thicker than 1/4″ ??
Those will not hold anything thinner than 5/32″ and the LAA is only 1/8″ thick.

You can see I have altered my camp and removed some of the metal that gets in the way when using it at a low angle. Clamping force is the same as it was prior to removal or hump.

Just thought I would suggest my personal guess as to why the vice only has contact at the tip. Most knives are tapered triangles not flat squares. If the WE Clamp closed like a standard wood or metal vise (2 blocks coming together) it would only contact at the fattest part of the knife down at the heal of the blade leaving a large gap at the…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic New guy, I need help… in the forum Welcome Mat 4 years ago
Don’t have the Pro but I think it has locking detents location, and a set length of micro adjustment? Why the left to right side is not exactly the same by a degree is probably just manufacture tolerance. What I can explain is that as the knife blade apex height changes above 5/8 of an inch over the clamp, the angle of the stone will ch…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic Talk me into a 130 in the forum Welcome Mat 4 years, 2 months ago
I did that same thing.. by the time I was done, spent more than the 130 and still needed the upgraded vice.. got one from a friend that was an original gen 3. If you think you can do the 120 and plan to add to it, go for the 130 and be done.

Thanks for the help!

airscapes replied to the topic HELP in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 2 months ago
Another think to always check when you get down below 15 degrees is that your stone is not hitting the vise.. it can take a long time to remove enough vise to get a burr.. been there don that!

airscapes replied to the topic Bevel widening at the tip. How to prevent? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 3 months ago
Hi Jacob, yes it is a balancing act and tilting the blade is typically how this is achieved and depending on the knife, a multi stage sharpening with repositioning can be required. I am sure one of the more experienced guys will come along shortly but while you wait, try doing a search. Put Bevel Width in the search box and see if you can find…[Read more]

airscapes replied to the topic uneven burr sizes.. in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 3 months ago
Cmyhero, I don’t know which system you are using, or what angle you are sharpening at. So rather than a lot of back and fort I will relate an issue that happened to me that sounds similar.
I was using the WE 120 with the standard vice trying to get a low angle on a knife. Like you one side seems to go fine but not the other. Turned out my st…[Read more]

Root of the Burr?? What does that mean, there should be NO burr or hint of burr when you get to stropping.. Please define your use of the word Burr in this context.
