Marc H replied to the topic Can/will Gen 3 Pro Clamp damage blade coating? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 7 months ago
Tony, I think you need to not take the chance with any knife, that any sort of damage, however slight, would really harm the knives appearance. I generally use a small rectangular patch of real leather chamois, dry, between my knives and the vise jaws. (All my vises are Gen 3 vises). It serves two purposes. It allows for a more secure cl…[Read more]

I think sticking to a size referencing or size numbered nomenclature makes more sense to most experienced users then adopting a new arbitrary though ordered nomenclature like a,b,c or 1,2,3. At least the old nomenclature though not perfect gives the user an idea or sense of size comparison as it fits into, or compares with, our past user experiences.

I forgot to tell you, you will have to subtract the readings from 90º when using the bottom magnet. I like the Wixey because it locks in readings quickly and I got consistent repetitive readings. It lacks the resolution of some more expensive models. But the wixey’s precision was enough for my purposes.

I always zeroed it base down and used it with the magnet attaching it to the stone. I think you’re overthinking it. These are relative angles we’re setting, relative to the zeroed horizontal position. As long as every angle you set using the cube is done with the same method and cube /stone placement relative to the clamped knife, it’ll give yo…[Read more]

These are water soluble suspensions. Some bottles you have to really shake, shake, shake…I’m sure that if the company filling the bottles didn’t shake it well, to start, you could have a more watery bottle full.
The higher the grit, the larger/heavier the diamond, the more prone it is to settle out…the more you’ll need to shake it up.

I have not experienced the diamond stones becoming magnetized. I have used 5 different brand digital angle devices. The one I’m using now has the strongest magnet. I do see some metal fuzz on the digital cube, sometimes, that I wipe away.

Haffner, we have had a similar discussion on this forum, in the past, for mounting Wicked Edge stones on Wicked Edge paddles so they could be removable/interchangeable. There’s been ideas thrown around but nothing anyone has ever done and shared about, yet.

I agree with Pinkfloyd. I forgot convexing edges was on your wish list. The Gen 3 Pro is the only model Wicked Edge that allows you to simply convex knive edges. It will take attention to detail and convex edges are a tedious, laborious, process, but it’s not hard to do with the Gen 3 Pro.
tcmeyer has a Youtube video showing how he does this.

I’d start 100/200, 400/600, 800/1000. Then, I’d suggest the 1500 diamond with 6µ diamond lapping film for the glass blank side. Then I’d go with 2 sets of leather strops, with diamond emuslions: 4µ/2µ, then 1.0µ/0.5µ. Then call it finished. This is a good all around progression to achieve a very sharp and fairly polished edge once the diamond…[Read more]

DeeR, you hit it right on the head. You use your eyeballs, your tools like an angle cube and your common sense to try to align it and record that position as best you can. At best, it’s an educated guess.
If the results are you were able to sharpen your Tormec assisted, clamped knife, then consider it a success.
Please don’t misunderstand m…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge forum Tony. Is it possible to post a photo of one of these knives clamped in your vise, in the same position you sharpened it. That may help us to help you.

Here’s a 36 aluminum post Lg Curved Rectangular Rack-It, I just finished. It’s ready to send off to a “Face Book Edge Snobs” Wicked Edge user. It’ll accommodate 18 pairs of any medium, type or thickness, Wicked Edge paddles.
He’s just about a year into sharpening with his Wicked Edge but it’s obvious he has plans to expand his stone c…[Read more]

airscapes, There are two reasons to employ paddle bumpers or stones stops, my preferred name. One reason is to cushion the stone as it bumps down against the ball arms. The other reason, which is why I started using use these stone stops, is to limit the travel and the range of motion of the sharpening paddles as they slide up and down the gui…[Read more]

Lenny, realize the Pro Pack II was introduced about 5 or 6 years ago, possible longer, with those includes grit mediums, in that combination and it has never been changed or updated, since. It was conceived as a sort of, “one size fits all” combination top-of-the-line sharpening set-up. It still works today, just as well as it did when i…[Read more]

Stropping like other mediums has a progression from coarse to fine grit. The difference with stropping compounds are the abrasive grit materials are suspended in the stropping compound, whichever your using, (i.e., paste, emulsions or spray solutions), and they’re not affixed and held in place to the substrate, like sharpening mediums. This a…[Read more]

My next addition would be the 1500 Diamond Stone/Glass Blank combo with 6µ Diamond lapping Film, on the glass, to round out the sharpening profile, before finishing with the leather strops. 5µ/ 3.5µ paste followed with 1µ/0.5µ paste is a good start. I prefer the basic “cow” leather strops. I think they’re more forgiving and less expensiv…[Read more]
