Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Skandi grind on a bushcraft knife in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 5 years ago
With regards to the burr I would attempt to use an edge leading stroke on the side I was sharpening as my last sharpening strokes with each grit in the progression, in an attempt to limit the burr formation, all together. I would also employ a felt block pulled down the apex after each grit to attempt to remove any remnant of a burr.
If there…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, Dean. Which W.E. model sharpener do you use?
The Skandi, as you know, is essentially a sort of chisel grind or single sided ground knife. The primary grind is called a “flat grind” or a “zero grind” on the Skandi because the bevel angle is the same angle as that entire angle ground side of the knife. The o…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic W.E. Rack-Its Stone Holders for Sale in the forum Want to Sell 5 years ago
I just mailed off another one of my 24 post Rigid Hybrid “Rack-Its”, I was given the opportunity to build for another new forum member. This is proving to be a popular “Rack-It” design because of it’s capacity, (12 pairs of stones), and it’s compact design. It allows you to easily see and reach your sharpening stones. It also can hang on the wa…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Gen 3 Pro in the forum Main Forum 5 years ago
The Gen 3 Vice showed in the file I attached is off a WE130 model. I don’t know if that has anything to do with the number of stacked pairs of belleville washers. It’s possible W.E. updated the vises to include the 6th pair in the stack at a later date or the Gen 3 Vise used with the Gen 3 Pro model intentionally was fitted with the extra w…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Oops, how did I just make these scratches? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years ago
Frank, W.E. moved to these larger diameter guide rods to improve the precision and tolerances. This change was done when W.E. moved to a new style, new plastic material, sharpening stone paddle handles. This increased guide rod diameter has reduced the space between the paddles and the guide rods to reduce the wobble or slop we once e…[Read more]

Pat, just to share with you and other W.E. users looking to make the move “up” in their systems, as you have….
The older or original “Standard Vise model” that I believe you’re referring to as the “Gen 2”, can be upgraded with the same new Gen 3 Vise clamping system as utilized on your new Gen 3 Pro model. Depending on which particular…[Read more]

Patrick, the grit size and size comparisons described for W.E. stones were originally made by visually observing the scratch depth, width and space between those scratches with a high powered microscope with distance measuring capabilities. The sizes as described are comparitive measurements done from grit to grit. How they relate to the visual…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum Patrick Hunziker!
I my guessing your curious of the grit particle size on the new 2200/3000 grit diamond stones to help you to figure how to use and incorporate your other Wicked Edge stones and sharpening mediums together in your sharpening progression…from coarsest to finest.
Here is the link to an article from the…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Gen 3 question on uneven ground blades in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years ago
Pat, if you find a balance between the Gen 3 Pros central lever angle adjuster’s position and each side’s individual angle adjuster, when using the mods, I’m sure you’ll be able to adjust for the different angles seen on each side of a uneven bevel or asymmetrically ground knife, for most situations; 60/40 and 70/30 uneven bevels. The exception…[Read more]

In the same scope of discussion as “Organic ” presents I also think besides steel dependence we also have the sharpening medium to consider. For those harder more chip prone steels I find the whetstone sharpening mediums more effective to sharpen these steels. I utilize the scrubbing strokes, just the same with the whetstones, with much less c…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Gen 3 question on uneven ground blades in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years ago
Pat, yes that is a shortcoming of the Gen 3 Pro model. A work- around that may help is accessorize with a micro-angle adjuster mod offered by Ed K, forum member “NotSharpEnuff”. This modification increases the angle adjustment range for each side’s individual angle adjustment on the Gen 3 Pro. It may help with some uneven bevel knives, if the…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Cheese Knife in the forum Welcome Mat 5 years ago
Michael, after doing a little reading up on the web what makes a good cheese knife, nothing indicates sharpness as a needed quality. I found that different style knives are used with different cheeses. That being said, I’d probably start simply with a strop on your knife. I’d expect refining and smoothing the edge will probably help cont…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Machete knife can I sharpen? in the forum Main Forum 5 years ago
Very long knives, like your machette example, may be too long to sharpen them all at once and may need to be repositioned and sharpened in sections. I think a good approximation of the overall length that you can reach efficiently with the W.E. is 1-1/2 × the guide rod length. So, with an 8″ guide rod, you should be able to sharpen a 12″ or 13″…[Read more]

The soft more compressible nature of the strops and since the abrasive compound is simply applied to the surfaces and not permanently adhered contributes to the difference in the polishing behavior of strops vs the sharpening behavior of the lapping films. The abrasives can slide and roll across the strop mediums giving them their polishing or…[Read more]

Kris, to be sure you purchase the correct diameter guide rods to match your particular version WE100, I suggest you stick with W.E. for that particular accessory. You probably should order them via a phone call to be sure you get what you need.

Kris, first of all welcome to the W.E. Forum.
IMO it is more about your technique. I believe, by trying to follow the length of the knife as it curves down at the tip there is the inadvertent tendency to pull the strop down and onto the knife edge while doing that. To avoid this, break down your stropping strokes into shorter sections of the k…[Read more]
