I’d be more wary of then being tourist replicas, antiqued copies or counterfeits.

Dwight after cutting my fingertip off my left ring fingertip years ago, I created my first set of Finger Guards/Safety Mods.
Here’s the first W.E. forum post where I introduced my concept/idea for finger safety shields:

I wouldn’t call it a weak spot…it’s hard to concentrate on stone placement, good sharpening technique, and dangling finger tips all at the same time. A physical barrier between your hands/fingers and the sharpened knife edge reduces the chances of cutting your self, greatly, without having to limit your sharpening technique, stone motion or…[Read more]

Dwight, you are correct it is easier to cut yourself with edge leading strokes. It requires a very high level of attention and conscientiousness to avoid cutting yourself, or, to make use of added external safety measures to help you avoid blade contact and cutting your self.
There are several safety methods you can employ. You can wear cut res…[Read more]

Howard, I advocate checking and adjusting the stone set angles with each and every grit or medium change.
With Ed’s micro-angle adjusters it makes this a quick and easy step.
I don’t intentionally attempt to draw a burr with each grit I use. I can say that a burr generally does form as a result of my sharpening technique. My final sharpening s…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, ck. I ask those friends that I sharpen knives for simply to not sharpen them at all. To bring them back to me me more often, if the knives need sharpening.
For those knife users that do use really their knives, like fishermen, for instance, I suggest they buy and make use of inexpensive fixed angle knife s…[Read more]

Franky4246, welcome to the W.E. forum. I have no experience with that specific knife so I wouldn’t profess to know how to clamp and sharpen it. I can share with you with a few years worth of W.E. knife sharpening under my belt that:
- You don’t need to have the knife positioned within the jaws and resting down on the depth key pins. The pi…

Welcome TKC. I simply wipe my diamond stones with a dry clean towel. I’ve been using W.E. sharpeners for a while now and this has been sufficient for me. I guess a can of compressed air spray used to blow dust from computers and keyboards could be used.
I prefer to keep my diamond stones dry. Others use little batter powered scrubbing bru…[Read more]

I sharpened a knife today at 15dps bevel angle using an all diamond stone progression: 400, 600, 800, 1000, then new version 1500, 2200, 3000, and last I used the old version 1500 grit diamond stone. I saw no discernable difference between the scratch patterns imparted with the recently released 3000 grit diamond stone and the original version 1…[Read more]

Here’s a new project “airscapes” and I collaborated on. This is a prototype of his 3D printed Plastic Safety Shields. I’ll try them soon to see how I like them. I have no problem with them being opaque since I don’t look through the shields at the clamped knife edge. When I sharpen the left side I look from the right side and vice versa. When…[Read more]

I didn’t find balsa as forgiving as leather. For me it dented and gouged and split off layers and became an uneven surface. The leather even though it can and does become gouged with use it still can continue to be used. I found the leather holds the strop compound better then the balsa wood. Also the leather cleans fairly easily and can see co…[Read more]

Mark, I agree that you need to practice safety first sharpening knives. I am not a fan of what I found to be bulky cut proof gloves, that others prefer to use. Although the gloves do work quite well, if you like them. I find I’m always putting them on and taking them off again.
I prefer to use Safety Shields on my sharpening stones. The shie…[Read more]

Here’s another knife rack I use. These are counter-top magnetic knife racks made by Boker. These racks like the magnetic wall rails hold your knives secure while keeping them air exposed and dry so the knives stay sanitary, unlike a knife block with the narrow enclosed slots.
