Welcome to the WE forum Casey!
I don’t own an WE GO but I will attempt to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. It is true that on some knives you will not be able to use the full surface of the stones as the result of the blade height in the clamp. If you are worried that this will cause uneven wear on the stones, you can flip the…[Read more]

Learning how to know when to change grits is one of the most important aspects of sharpening. The method where you change stroke direction that Mark mentioned is going to be the most reliable, but when you have more experience you will be able to tell by the feel and sound of the stones on the blade. When it looks like it is time to change grits,…[Read more]

I’m kind of surprised how scratched the bevels look under magnification after that progression. I think you’ll see a big improvement when the stones wear in more.
Have you been checking your angles with each grit change and verifying that you have reached the apex by examining the bevels with your scope and some sharpie? How have you been…[Read more]

Is the Spyderco stone for serrated edges? What was the reason for mounting it so that it uses the edge rather than the face when sharpening?

TCMeyer, you’ve always got the the most custom DIY tricks in the book. I admire you ingenuity.
I agree, if you wan to change the blade profile (meaning the shape of the blade), you will want to grind perpendicular to the edge much like you would do to repair the tip of a knife. This can be done without power tools, but it will be a lot of work.…[Read more]

Organic replied to the topic Angles – To Re-profile or not??? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 4 months ago
I totally understand the need to keep the details confidential while it is still in development. The protection of intellectual property is a big deal in the line of work that I’m in as well. I’m excited to see it (and purchase it) when it is ready.

Clay, do you have an idea of when we might expect the new convexing setup to be available for purchase? Will this be an accessory that works with the current WE models, or is it a new tool?

I now often use the 14 micron strops after the 0.6 micron ceramic with results that I personally find pleasing. The result is an increase in polish. It is counterintuitive, But strops finction very differently from how the stones and lapping films do. Don’t worry, you won’t cause harm to the edge by using the 4/2 micron strop set after the 3 micron film.

If you believe that the leather strop set you received was defective then contact WE and they will help you. If you call during business hours you will talk with a real person who can help you troubleshoot the issues and who will be able to send you a replacement set if they determine that is the issue.
I’ve never heard of the diamond emulsions…[Read more]

If you recorded your clamping position for that Wustof you can re-clamp it and fix the edge so that it is sharp all the way from heel to tip. I would drop back down to 400 grit and get a good burr on both sides of the blade before progressing through your other grits. It also helps to re-check the angle with each grit change. You will find that…[Read more]

As far as I am aware, that is the recommended way to apply a convex bevel using the WE. The details are described on the WE knowledge base. Once the convex edge is applied you can maintain it by stropping at the most acute angle.
An alternative would be to attach a soft substrate to your WE handles and then apply sand paper to the surface. I…[Read more]

<!–more–>Keep in mind that convex bevels can be applied using the Wicked Edge and you can also maintain them by stropping on the WE. You don’t have to convert your Bark River knives to a V-grind just to sharpen them on the WE.

I watched this yesterday when it came up in my YouTube subscription feed. It has some good information. I need to put another pair of scissors back on my WE and try out his techniques.

I think you’ll find as your knowledge grows and your technique becomes more refined that the learning curve never truly ends. Each knife presents an opportunity to try something different. That is part of what makes sharpening a hobby unto itself rather than just a means to an end for me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy using my knives as well, but I…[Read more]

I think you hit everything you’ll want out of the gate. Did you get a base plate or do you have a place to mount it? Make sure you have some sharpie markers on hand and some band aids if you’re the clumsy type.

Try contacting Wicked Edge directly. You always get a real person on the phone when you call during business hours. They will be able to tell you if there have been any changes since the 2017 update.

I like Tom’s idea of doing a convex bevel on this knife. That would probably work well.
Edit: Putting a convex edge on a knife is a more involved process than the typical way that you sharpen with the WE. You might want to stick with the basics until you’re more confident.
