Welcome Chico Neto!
My best guess is that you have been missing the apex when you switch over to the ceramic stones. If you have a digital angle gauge you should use that to verify that the angles stay the same throughout your sharpening progression. I do this with every single grit change. The other thing you can do is to use a sharpie marker on…[Read more]

The micro fine 1.4 / 0.6 micron ceramics are the exact formulation as the standard stones that come with a sharp maker. Clay sources these from the same manufacturer as Spyderco uses.

Hi Aaron, welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum!
If you want, you can use the 3 micron film after the 1500 grit stone, but it will take more strokes to erase the 1500 grit scratches than the 6 micron will take. Clay posted some very informative microscope images in this thread that show how various diamond lapping films do after the 1500.

You’ve got a good attitude towards life, that much is clear. Law enforcement friends should keep you in good supply of blades needing to be sharpened. I expect that there are going to be a fair number of them who would appreciate the superior sharpening that a skilled WE user can provide.

Sharpening on the WE for money is a tough one. If your goal is actually to earn a fair wage for your time then you have to charge a lot more than most people are willing to pay. If your goal is only to make some extra cash then it can be good, but using a belt sander is really the way to go if you want to strike that balance of money earned v.…[Read more]

The lapping films are most similar to ultra fine diamond stones. They abrade quickly and put a nice polish on the bevels with very little work especially when compared to the time it takes to get a mirrored finish with just diamond stones and strops. They are not a replacement for strops, but do produce impressive results when used in conjunction…[Read more]

The Tormek will get the job done, but you’ll have to sacrifice the repeatability to some extent. The other remaining option is to remove the blade and clamp on the pivot flat like Tom suggested. You will be able to consistently clamp the blade that way, but you’ll have to disassemble the knife every time.

This would be a case where I would reach for my Tormek small knife adapter. As a alternative you might have better luck clamping the blade if you apply a few layers of that aluminium foil tape used in duct work.

You can sharpen knives with uneven bevels on the gen. 3 pro, but you would have to move the lever arm each time you switch which side of the blade you are working. While possible, it is a serious handicap compared to the other models where you can set both angles independently through their whole working range. The WE130 is the most versatile setup.

The stones really do have a break in period. Although I had read it on this forum, I didn’t fully believe it when I started out. Previous to acquiring my WE I had been using the Lansky system to sharpen. I was pretty disappointed with the results of my first few knives on the WE. My Lansky edges were much sharper and had a better polish level.…[Read more]

That’s a great looking bevel Travis! You did a good job clamping the blade in the sweet spot as evidenced by the even bevel width across the length of the blade.

I think you’re conceptualizing the sharpening process incorrectly. If you set the angle to 26.85 degrees (or any other angle) it will stay at that angle unless you change stones or change the setting. You can prove this to yourself using a sharpie to mark the bevels and a magnifying device. Once you change grit levels, check that the new grit is…[Read more]

They have been discussed a bit in some recent threads, but I have not used one. I think it would be a fun tool to have as a way of quantifying the sharpening results I’m getting but I don’t have a need for it and it is kind of expensive.

I agree with Marc on this one. If I were to attempt it I would use the Tormeck knife adapter to clamp it. I wouldn’t worry too much about the ability to document clamping position because it is not your own knife and you’ll probably only have to sharpen it once in a very long while. When you do re-sharpen it you will just have to find the sweet…[Read more]

I don’t really know why the F&S is not as popular around these parts. The unit is equally capable to the WE130 and is equally well regarded. It should clamp easily to a work bench for a home setup. I have the generation 3 pro model and it is a very nice model. If I were to do it again I would probably purchase the WE130 or pro pack 3 because they…[Read more]

Welcome to the WE forum!
Based on what you described it seems to me like you did nearly everything correctly and have already diagnosed your issue; you should check the angles with each grit change for optimal results. The angles tend not to vary all that much (+/- 0.5 degrees) when you’re using the WE diamond stones. This is probably why the…[Read more]
