NorCalQ started the topic Stropping Pressure? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years ago
When I first started using WE, I reduced the angle 1 or 2 degrees for leather stropping. I found it difficult to reach the edge, as seen my by scope. I also found it difficult to get a hair whittling edge. After struggling with this, I finally tried not reducing the angle and using a light stroke. After that, I’ve been able to get all the way…[Read more]

Oh…sorry for the confusion. You are right on. Used the router to machine that recess on the underside of the paper stone base, so it wouldn’t show on the top side. The light’s clamp slides right in. At stock thickness, it was too thick for the clamp. Paper stone machine very nicely.

I have modified my base to accept clamp-on lites. These 5W LEDs are very bright and allow me to get a good view of scratch patterns on the bevels. I thought about permanently mounting the lites, however this allows for easier storage.
Having a hard time posting pics, so I’ll post them separately…

NorCalQ replied to the topic Raising a burr in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years ago
Just to add… every time I move up in grit, I scrub one side to get rid of previous marks, check for the burr, then move to the other side and do the same. After that, I switch to alternating strokes and don’t worry about the burr, until I move up in grit again. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse the issue.

Others will chime in a give good advice I’m sure, however in my own experience, I found at around the same point you are at, I gave my stones a good cleaning and like magic, they felt smooth and broken in. I have yet to read of anyone using other means of breaking in their diamond stones. At that point, I become a lot more aware of how much of…[Read more]

NorCalQ replied to the topic Oops, how did I just make these scratches? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 1 month ago
Ok…I may be stating the obvious here, but if you’re new to WE, like me, I was advised to start with some practice blades. I went to a thrift store and picked up some really cheap kitchen knives of different sizes and practiced on those. It was a big help and taught me some basics. Also, it helped with the break-in of the stones.

Ya…its such a nice task light, I now have 5 of them. One is on a large floor drill press, another on a small benchtop DP setup for a specific operation, 3rd is on a small bench for clock repairs and the 2 on the WE. I have good shop lites, but with my old eyes, the extra lighting makes a big difference.

I’m a relative newbie, however when I started out, I encountered the same problem. Without realizing it, occasionally the bottom end of my stroke was traveling below the bevel. This meant that the top of my stone was going below the bevel. In the above scratch pattern on the side of the blade, you can see the how the stone traveled down below t…[Read more]

Thanks. Messed around for months trying to find the right mounting situation for these lights. I tried the sides of the tables, wood bases..but for me, this solution works best.

I got similar lights first that were 3W, but found they weren’t bright enough. I also tried some that were adjustable warm, medium and daylight, but again, not quite bright enough. These lights are daylight color temp and plenty bright enough. Once po…[Read more]

Well, thanks for all the help with the base. I was confused, as WE was saying that it had to be either aluminum or quartz. I finally emailed a pic of my base and they confirmed it was in fact, paper stone.
Woodworking bits worked perfectly on it with no issues. I’ve include a pic of the cuts on the underside and the lites clipped onto the re…[Read more]

Just found out, even if it’s quartz, I’ll need diamond bits.

Marc, I don’t think it is aluminum or granite. It is charcoal in color, with color thru and thru. I believe it seems softer than granite.

I have a Pro Pack 2 that has a black base that is about 1 1/4″ thick and very heavy. I’m wondering what the base material is, as I would like to machine out a small portion of the underside, in order to accommodate some lites? I’m suspecting it’s quartz. If it is, can the quartz be machined with carbide wood working router bits?

So…getting back to the topic I originally wrote…does the magnetic Angle Gauge transfer it’s magnetism to the metal stones and cause metal fragments to be held onto?

NorCalQ replied to the topic So…Is There A Repair For This??? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 2 months ago
Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll leave things as is. I fear if I go down deep enough to get rid of the scratches, I will alter the bevel’s profile at that point. I’ll chalk it up to the learning process and a reminder that diligence is always necessary.
