Glad you like it. It worked perfectly for me as well. I just stuck a switched power strip to the under side, so now I have switched power. The fact that it’s easy up and easy away is everything for me.

Anyone here ever use mineral oil to prep a strop for strop media? Somewhere I read that the mineral oil helps to disperse the media evenly and keeps strops from drying out.

OK…this is not really a mod, but I didn’t where else to put this. I have a garage shop that I use for a car, clock restorations and woodworking, so space is at a premium. I needed a small table that is stable and collapsable. I found this table and it is working out great. I sit on a low stool, so I did have to shorten the legs, however the…[Read more]

Thank you. I’ll def check out the 60x loop. There are so many loops and things out there. I’ve a few without success, so recommendztions are appreciated. I also restore alarm clocks and use various magnifiers, but none of those work well for knives, besides the USB scope. I just wish the USB scope was less hassle to use.

Thanks for the link, however I already have a laptop scope for hi-res viewing. What I want is a hi-powered, lighted, magnifying glass for quick viewing, just to check my progress as I sharpen. I recently saw a video of Clay using one.

I’m looking for a good, lighted magnifying glass. I have a scope that attaches to my laptop, but sometimes it’s just more trouble than I wish to go to. I see lots on Amazon, but they all seem to be 10x power. Is that about it?

Thanks for the response. Would you strop after the 1000 to 1500?

What is presently preferred between the two? From what I’ve read, emulsions suspend the diamond better and may be easier to spread. Is that still the case and if so, are the WE emulsions the best buy or are there better deals to be had?

So far, I’ve done all my edges to mirror, as best I can with 3.5 Strops. With that, I can whittle hair and I’ve been happy with that. At this point, I have 2 questions…
- What will 1 and 0.5 diamond spray on leather give me?
2. If I want a more toothy edge, with some bite, where do I stop in the progression and should I still strop aft…[Read more]

NorCalQ replied to the topic 1500 Stones, Old vs New? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 4 months ago
Has Clay given any feedback on the issue of new vs old 1500 stones? I’m wondering, if they do give the same size scratch patterns, then why would the old give a better “polish” than the new?

Would then, the older 1500 stones fit somewhere between or after the new 1500>2200>3000 stones?

Is there any difference between the 1500 stones that I got a year or so ago and the new 1500 stones? I’m sure the new 1500>2200>3000 progression works great, but will my old model 1500 stones fit in place of the new or do I need to purchase them again, in new form? I’d hate think that all wear aside, all 1500 stones would not be created equal.

NorCalQ replied to the topic Tormek in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 4 months ago
Bought my Tormek years ago and I haven’t used it much. That said, I have updated many of the features and use do use it for reprofiling chisels, plane irons and knives. I just now reprofiled an old folder from 20* to 25*. What would have taken me quite a while with 100 grit stones, took me about 5 minutes on the Tormek. Now I can go to the sto…[Read more]

I know this may be too early to ask, but does anyone have an idea as to these stone’s longevity? Will the 2200/3000 stones last at least as long as the 1500?

I learned how to do gentle strokes by watching WE vids on YT by ModifiedZ. Although my strokes are nowhere near as gentle as his, I think he exemplifies using a gentle, deliberate technique, that is slower, but very methodical and effective.
