Richard replied to the topic YouTube video shows drawing a burr on both sides between each stone in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 10 months ago
It’s really true that instead of feeling for a burr, you can use the USB microscope (or really just your naked eyes) to see the light being reflected off of what want’s to be an apex. I have high intensity LED lights shining on both sides of the blade and it’s really remarkable how great that method works.

I tend to agree. I usually start at 800 grit and go from there. If I’m not seeing consistent scratch patterns the entire length of the blade, I drop it to maybe 600 to dig in a little deeper and go from there.

I do appreciate this post because I’ve been experiencing pretty much the same thing over the few years I’ve had my Gen3. Every single time I clamp a knife into it, I get angle variations off to the right and I’ve always wondered if there’s a way to correct the variation without shimming the knife back to the left. Tomorrow, I’ll do a few…[Read more]

Anyone have any experience doing one? I got a request over the weekend and don’t know if I’m setup to do one. That curve kind of makes me nervous.

Marc,
Thank you for you comment and I have taken it to WE with no results to this point.
I do know this is a work horse by every definition. Was just worried about the spring between the cam lobe and clamping arm. It definitely works very well, but didn’t know if it was original equipment or not.

wickededge replied to the topic WE GO – Alignment Guide/Low Angle Adapter Dilemma in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 4 months ago
Thank you for the comment. We are working on redesigning it based on feedback we’ve received. That said, the reason for all the locations in the lower half is because of the occasional need to tilt the tip of the knife down to find the “sweet spot”. The amount of space we gave was obviously excessive and we’ll try to move some of that real estate…[Read more]

Hi Kenny,
Try mounting the blade so that the back of the vise is lined up with the start of the belly of the blade, or thereabouts. You’ll have to tinker a little to find the “sweet spot”. If you need more info on finding the sweet spot, do a search here on the forum and you’ll find some excellent posts from forum members. You’ll probably find…[Read more]

I use my Micro-Fine ceramics if I want extreme sharpness. In our testing, some of the lowest (best) values we’ve gotten for sharpness on the BESS machine and our own machine have been after finishing with the white Micro-Fine stone. If I spend enough time with strops and emulsions and then kangaroo strops and diamond/cbn sprays, I can get a better…[Read more]
