I do think your edges will benefit from having one set of strops. I would also recommend the 4 / 2 micron strop pack if you’re only getting one set. This is not to say that the edge right off of the stones won’t be great also. The Wicked Edge will get your kitchen knives consistently sharp every time so I know you’re going to be happy with the results.

I don’t doubt that using a honing rod (ceramic or steel) works to restore sharpness to an edge. I have used them myself and know that they get the job done. Ceramic hones are way better than a metal hones in my experience. Hones are more convenient than setting up the WE for a touch up. You’d have to keep your WE in the kitchen with a set of fine…[Read more]

Expidia,
I’ve been thinking about this a bit more and I think the use of your ceramic rods to maintain the edge between sharpening on the WE might be the source of your issue here. When you’re restoring the edge with the ceramic rods you are very likely adding a micro bevel. It is nearly impossible to maintain a perfectly matched stroke angle…[Read more]

I think you have to first of all evaluate the condition of the blade. Are there chips? How severe? Then decide the grit to use. You start at 200 and after inspection, maybe go to 100 so less time is invested. No chips? Maybe start at 800 and go from there.

I’ll use anything from 400 all the way up to the 1.4 micron ceramic as a starting point for resharpening a knife. It all depends on how the edge looks and if there are any micro chips I want to get rid of. Like you, I have found that the 800 grit is often a good grit if the edge is in average shape. If it is needing work then the 400 or 600 will…[Read more]

Richard replied to the topic Creating a burr in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 11 months ago
I guess I’m wondering about his claim of making the edge weak by not checking for a burr after 200, he got a bunch of likes so I’m thinking that us here on this forum constitute a different opinion. I myself did two knives this afternoon and had a burr at 1600, did a couple of dozens stroke and I consider it a work of art.

Organic replied to the topic Creating a burr in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 11 months ago
MarcH sent me a series of microscope images that show a very small burr is formed at every grit in his sharpening progression even though he was not intentionally creating a burr. Burr formation happens if you are properly apexing the edge.
I intentionally form a burr that I can feel on the first stone and then just follow by loupe or microscope…[Read more]

Tommie, I agree with you about the clamp position. Look at what I did yesterday to mine. I used the existing table and stone rest.

Richard replied to the topic Creating a burr in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 11 months ago
A topic popped up in another forum regarding how far through the grit progression should one try and obtain a burr. I commented that I will look for a burr as long as I can still feel one which is pretty high. I got this response, am I wrong in my methodology?

May I ask what the reasoning was for not using diamonds to sharpen this material?

Organic replied to the topic Lighted Magnifier? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 11 months ago
I have both of those lighted scopes MarcH posted. The “hand microscope” is a bummer because it magnifies better than anything in that price point but it inverts the image which makes using it an endlessly frustrating process in my opinion.
The “60x LED lighted jeweler’s loupe” is a great buy and I use mine just about every time I sharpen. It…[Read more]

A quick update (although not yet a solution). We’re working to solve the root problem, but until then:
- Avoid using the toolbar button to create a link; this seems to trigger the problem (replies are hidden, until manually approved by a moderator)
HUGE thanks to MarcH and Airscapes for their troubleshooting, which has led to this discovery.

Thanks all, for your great troubleshooting. It seems that any topic or reply that includes links is automatically removed until it’s approved by a moderator.
But I don’t know why this has started to happen. We run several anti-spam plugins, any one of which could’ve received a recent update that changes its behavior. So I’m in the process of…[Read more]

Just a note to say that, whatever is happening, it isn’t intentional. I’m looking into it, but don’t have any working theories yet.
