Marc H replied to the topic Re: the new 2200/3000 stones? in the forum Abrasives 5 years, 7 months ago
I will add this, when transitioning from one abrasive grit medium to the next, through experience, I have found it’s helpful yielding better results, to utilize a several grit backstep or overlap. The overlap though seemingly a redundant effort, appears to better blend and remove the previous scratch patterns and give a better, cleaner, sharp an…[Read more]

I will attempt to answer your questions to where these stones fit in the progression:
It is our nature to try to place things in a seemingly orderly arrangement. Since we stacked blocks as children one on top of the other. I posted previously, it is not a simple thing to arrange different grit mediums together in an orderly systematic ar…[Read more]

Rodney, I’ve only used lapping films dry. There has been some discussion on this form, in the past, about the possible benefits of using a lubricant, water or oil, but I’ve never read any reports on the results shared by those trying that. Therefore, I’ll continue using my Diamond Lapping Film paddles dry. I have had very good results usi…[Read more]

I wouldn’t think so. The Tormek holds the knife out in front and away from the vise allowing very low guide rod angle settings where the stones won’t contact the vise. You should be fine without the LAA.

Your knives look as though you could hold them in the Tormek Small Knife Holder then clamp the holder in the Wicked Edge jaws for sharpening. That would help you achieve the low bevel angles you stated you wanted to sharpen these knives at. Without utilizing the Tormek Small Knife Holder I don’t believe you can use the Wicked Edge for your knives.

If you can post photos of your personal wood carving knives it may help. I’m making a recommendation based on google photos. Possibly your knives are shaped differently.
If your knives are of straighter bladed style, you may be able to sharpen them on the Wicked Edge using the Tormek small knife adapter to hold them in the Wicked Edge vise j…[Read more]

I am as brand loyal to WEPS as any one here. I will tell you just what I told the last guy posting the same question, There are other sharpeners better suited for the small and intricate blade edges and various knife shapes seen in wood carving knives. Many have a knife end blade similar to a chisel while others have curved small scalpel like…[Read more]

Readheads here’s a forum thread from a while back where Bill devised a rack system to allow him to sharpen large and long knives while achieving lower rod angles then were possible at that time. A rack system similar to this supporting adjustable square bars mounted perpendicular to the normal vise setup’s square bar would allow you to make the…[Read more]

I cut the chamois tags ends that stick up above the vise close to the jaws with a sharp scissors to keep it out of the way.
There are limits to what you can clamp and sharpen with the W.E. that’s why we find the need to utilize the Low Angle Adapter and the Tormek small knife adapter. It’s good that you have both model vises to pick and choose…[Read more]

The newest version gen 3 vise has a tension adjuster. For your older version vise you may find if you clamp your knives higher in the jaws, closer to the spine where the knife is thicker and wrap a small patch of dry real leather chamois around the knife where it fits between the jaws, you should find the knife holds tighter.
I’m wondering if…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Micro Fine Ceramics vs Diamond Lapping Films in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 7 months ago
For me, with the ceramics stones, it’s an “either or” situation. Use either the Superfines (1200/1600) or the Microfines (1.4µ/0.6µ). They are manufactured differently, have different scratch patterns and characteristics that I don’t find blend well together. My personal preference is the Microfine set. I have tried to utilize both sets of th…[Read more]

Kevin, as I mull over your issue, I realized you said “on one side”. This suggest you may have another or an additional issue at play. By the nature of the WE100 Standard Vise System some knives when clamped will lean towards the left side. This will make the bevels uneven in height from knife side to side or the bevel may appear in a di…[Read more]
