There are too many different cutting implements to make a one size fits all sharpener set-up. Hence adaptations and modifications to broaden your tools usefulness to better fit your personal needs.

I have both models, the WE130 and the Gen 3 Pro. I prefer the WE130, (that’s in the Pro Pack 3.) There is nothing that can be done with the Gen 3 Pro that can’t be done with the WE130. But there are sharpening situations the WE130 allows that the Gen 3 Pro can’t easily accomplish.
For my needs the WE130 is a better fit. I have customized and…[Read more]

The longer bar doesn’t affect how you sharpen knives. You don’t need the low angle adapter, (LAA), unless you needed it already with the original length bar. The longer bar simply gives you a wider angle capacity you lacked with the regular length bar.
I needed the longer bar because I use an extra riser block. This allow me to achieve lo…[Read more]

Bob, the Wicked Edge steel square bar is 5/16″. You can replace it with a longer bar. It probably needs to be 14″ or 16″ longer, overall. Then you’ll be able to achieve the wide angle settings needed to sharpen the hoof sheers with the SA while the riser block is still in place. The longer square bar won’t effect your knife sharpening ab…[Read more]

Andrei, new (or newer) diamond stones, that haven’t become fully broken-in yet will yield rougher results then you can expect after they are well broken in, and for you to gain more sharpening experience, also. It generally takes about 10 knives minimum for the stones to begin to come around. That’s just about the same amount of sharpening ex…[Read more]

Andrei, here’s a forum post I made a few years ago when I first got started with Japanese knives and steels. It may be helpful for you. My experiences and perspective I’m sure has changed as I’ve gained sharpening experiences with many different knife brands and steels over the years.

Any knife that you can clamp secure and stabile in a position accessible to the sharpening medium, can be sharpened on the W.E. It’s not the WE. sharpener the knives have to “hold up to”, it’s the knife sharpener, the one operating the W.E. sharpener, and the sharpening method and sharpening medium employed.
The W.E. is simply a very secure…[Read more]

Andrei, welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum. I was in your shoes maybe 5 years ago when I purchased a collection of Miyabi Birchwood knives after reading them touted as “the world’s sharpest knives” on the internet and YouTube. I learned this lesson, then, that you are wondering about, now.
I thought I’d done my practicing and learning as Dwight s…[Read more]

I wanted them to be similar to the W.E. handles. Then I could better compare the abrasives because all factors considered, my sharpening strokes and techniques should be pretty much the same.

Chefy, I like your use of what looks like keyboard wrist pads on the granite base. Not only are they functional but they look nice also. Good choice.

000Robert, I like your stone/strop covers. “airscapes” also makes a stone cover version that fits over thicker whetstones.
Here’s the link to other Wicked Edge users accessories that are available.

This is my latest concept project. I was curious if these type of diamond stones were any good. Henry, the original poster certainly seems impressed by this diamond sharpening medium. I found myself with mixed feelings after digesting everything I could find to read. Afterall, these still are diamond sharpening stones which I’ve found thr…[Read more]

Henry, I use whetstones that are cut and mounted on Wicked Edge paddles to sharpen my harder steel high-end Japanese Chef’s knives. Actually for me, at HRc 60 an above, depending on my experience with the particular steel, the whetstones may be my preference. I have experience carbide tear out when using the W.E. diamond stones which led me s…[Read more]

First question I have, are you using a lighted magnified device to help you to see well? Many of use work with a USB microscope. Also I use a red or blue colored Sharpie. The color stands out and is easier to see where the ink is removed.
If it is as you describe, you may be sharpening a knife with a convex bevel.

The ceramics have their fans. Some tout them for the resulting enhanced sharpness they experience.
With the 1500 grit diamond it’s pretty clear, it’s a finer grit diamond stone. It can refine edge keenness and improve the polished appearance.
The lapping films are essentially just a very fine diamond sharpening stone. But due to their base…[Read more]

Welcome Kevin. I do have both the Micro-fine ceramic pair and the Super-fine set. I have used both of these enough that I am comfortable sharing my experiences. I do not use them on a regular basis any longer. When I started with my first W.E. setup, a Pro Pack 2, maybe 5 or more years ago, the ceramic sets were the finest grit sharp…[Read more]

The 800/1000 used last, when the progression up through there is done well, will leave you with a very sharp “working” edge. I finish every sharpened knife with at least the 4µ/2µ strop combination (on plain cow leather).
Results are more about the quality of the sharpening process used with each and every grit in your progression, the tim…[Read more]
