Welcome to the W.E. Forum Brett C.
See the last line above the red “NOTE”: While Kangaroo and Cow leathers can be used either unloaded or loaded with abrasive compounds, the Jende Nanocloth Ultra is meant to be used with the Jende Poly Diamond and CBN sprays and emulsions.
The Jende Nanocloth paddles for Wicked Edge are simply color-coded nano…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Don. There aren’t any regular forum participants that I can think of that are Commercial Series users.
Which model hard case is best for that model may be a question easily answered by W.E. customer service. I’d give them a call or submit a ticket.

I’d attach the third photo to the ticket. The visual proof will show them there is indeed a production issue for this plate.
Do you have any other fine grit plates? Like the 3000 grit? Are you seeing this concavity across all your fine grit stones; each and everyone of them; (1500, 2200, 3000)?

Welcome to the W.E. forum and W.E. sharpener’s community, Kevinchau270.
Sometimes there are problems seen in the diamond stones. We do see plating issues or maybe an agglomeration of diamond abrasive causing a high rough spot on the plates. The higher grit stones with their smaller abrasive size and thinner plating may be thinner and more wo…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. forum, Randy.
That pictured Forshner knife, I would clamp it high up in the jaws. Center the knife’s length, forward and aft. With it’s length centered, slightly rotate the handle down and the tip up. I do this to try to even out the arched shape of the cutting edge so it lays centered for the most part, across the vise.

I agree with Tom, replacement is the best way to go to be assured of the results. If not replaced, you’ll never be confident in the results you’ll see.
Tanned cow hide leather is inexpensive, easy to find and casy to cut to size. The original W.E. cow leather strips were hot glued in place. The old strips and adhesive residue are easily pee…[Read more]

I did a little internet searching some time back and saw there are some sources for tanned Kangaroo hide. I never got further than that.
The nano is an interesting alternative because it can be rinsed out when dirty.
What you want to use for polishing your sharpened edges depends on what you’re trying to do. What you choose to use and in w…[Read more]

The recommendation to reduce the angle setting by 2º is based on the compressibility of the cow leather. The intent is to help new strop users to not round over their sharpened edges while getting the hang of the stropping technique. The softer, thicker, more compressible cow leather can wrap down around the apex with the edge trailing str…[Read more]

Believe it not, I do it the same way. I don’t care much if my bevel heights across a sharpened edge change. Keeness, sharp edges and repeatability for future touchups are all that really matter to me for my practical purposes.

If it’s from the bottom jacking screw it’s probably a heli-coil insert. A tightly torqued jacking screw exerts a lot of force on the threads. As long as it tightens and the vise works well I would just use it. If it fails at some point W.E. customer service will take care of any issues.

Tape applied to the knife sides should protect the knife steel from unwanted damage from inadvertent, unintentional damage from steel dust that falls on the knife that’s shed with sharpening or that gets rubbed across the knives trapped on your fingertips as you handle the sharpening stones. New stones will shed abrasive dust also as they are…[Read more]

BTW, if you can’t find flat hex socket head screws at your hardware store Phillips flat head screws can be used. All that matters is 10/32 and the length you need. Don’t buy screws that are too long because if the heads sticks or ends stick out too far your sharpening stones may hit the screws.

Steve,
On the standard vises, WE100, and WE120 models, both vise screws, top and bottom, are removable, (if without unexpected defects), and interchangeable with suitably sized longer screws.

I’m not a defendent of the W.E. System. I’m the first to say it has it’s limitations. It is what it is. It doesn’t work perfectly well with every shape and style knife. Work with it and it’ll work for you. I did need to buy a variety of longer screws when I was mainly working with the “standard vise model…[Read more]

That’s why I’m a proponent for using creative thinking, accessories and modifications to help W.E. user’s to use their sharpeners easier, more efficiently and effectively. The W.E. alone cannot clamp and sharpen every knife. There are too many varieties. Sometimes the W.E. needs help and we have to get creative and intuitive. Afterall, the W.…[Read more]

Whether simply sharpening knives or reprofiling them, the process is essentially the same…it’s just a matter of degrees, how much steel is removed. You still need to find the best, most efficient clamping position, “the sweet spot” to carry either one out.
The poster, “Steve” who resurrected this old thread is using the technique to find…[Read more]
