sksharp replied to the topic Why not to buy the Wicked Edge. Best Knife Sharpener ? ? in the forum Main Forum 6 years, 6 months ago
Been away a while myself. I’ve had similar experience with the WE team and the sharpeners, from the GO to the commercial units, they are capable of better edges than any other option. I might be bias but that’s my opinion. Thanks NotVerySharp!

The GO is a great machine! For experienced or new sharpeners I believe this is all most people are looking for, and for the ones that want to go further making the move to a more expensive model much easier and less confusing at the start. Nice BBBYpsi!

sksharp replied to the topic I have pretty much cut up my leather strop in the forum Main Forum 6 years, 7 months ago
I have a dozen sets of strops and they all have some “spots” in them. If you think you have damaged your strops then take a butter knife and scrape the surface of the leather. I rough up all my strops to make the compound set into the strop better but it also seems to make the whole surface of the strop more uniform. This is also how I clean my…[Read more]

sksharp replied to the topic GO vs. 130 – Decisions, Decisions in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 7 months ago
If you have the money and you want the best, buy the 130! I have both the GO and the 130. The GO is great and for people on a budget may be the best option. I would buy the GO over either the 100 or the 120 but the 130 is a more versatile and more accurate machine. You made the right choice I think, but with those options I don’t think you would…[Read more]

sksharp replied to the topic Diamond Spray vs Polycrystalline Diamond Emulsion in the forum Stropping 6 years, 7 months ago
The poly is more uniform in the shape of the diamonds so less stray scratching. The emulsions don’t have to be re-applied as often and the small bottle will last a long long time. Sprays have to be applied more often. The emulsions are a superior product for me at least.

While you may not be happy with your result, the difference will not hurt the function of the knife. Get a couple cheapo knives and play with different things in your setup. I think you find what you need to do to even things up a bit quicker than you might think. A cheap thick blade can be a big help with learning how to setup and adjust your placement.

sksharp replied to the topic Damn, I really just screwed this edge up? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 7 months ago
I have to agree that 15 degs. is to acute for most folders. 18 to 22 degrees seems to work quite well on most all of them.
I have to take a lot of the folders I do down to sharpen properly. Pain in the butt however it is necessary for quite a few folders and makes sharpening much easier both in time and in results. Way less damage as well.

sksharp replied to the topic Ultimate Stropping Setup\Progression in the forum Stropping 6 years, 7 months ago
When an edge is taken to .1 mic. edge trailing strokes then just stropping with bare leather or something like denim will de-burr and smooth out the cutting edge. It’s a technique that a lot of people use on straight razors. Push cuts require toothless or smooth cutting edges like straight razors. This will make the edge “feel” less sharp…[Read more]

I have been a proponent of “purpose sharpening” which does mean some of the knives I do are done only to 600 grit. I have not heard anyone say that all kitchen knives should be done to 600 grit only though. My kitchen knives are all 1000 or higher with the exception of 2, large knife for melons and such and a carving/utility knife mainly used for…[Read more]

sksharp replied to the topic Shear sharpening?!? in the forum Product Announcements 6 years, 8 months ago
Sometimes sharpening the same as the manufacturer is not the best for the knife, or in this case scissors. I have not personally seen an convex edge that will perform the way a straight edge will. I do however understand your desire to retain the integrity the way the scissors were designed. Good luck

sksharp replied to the topic Diamond spray on kangaroo how often? in the forum Stropping 6 years, 8 months ago
I think one or two spritz is enough. The more you use your strops the less you have to apply the compound as it works into and actually becomes part of the leather. Even after cleaning, the strop is retaining some compound. Generally I wouldn’t apply compound (emulsions) until I’ve done 10 to 20 knives, 5 to 10 for the pastes. I scrape the strop…[Read more]

Need to add that if you order the GO tell them you want the 100/200 stones instead of the 200/600 that is standard, then you can purchase the rest 400 thru 1500. A longer set of rods will be helpful with the LAA. and tormek SKA. If you think you will have use for the Scissor attachment, I would encourage that as well.
I still think the best bang…[Read more]

Drew with your Nomadic life style I would think the the WE GO would do everything you want, be very portable and everything that will work with other systems will work with the GO. It sets up in a couple of minutes and stores in a very small space, a great space saver and would save you several hundred as well. I think this sharpener is designed…[Read more]

If it were me, a little over a year in, I would opt for the 130 over the 120 in a heart beat. The clamp is faster, easier and simplifies the process quite a bit over the older clamp design. I think if you have diamond stones to at least 1000, 1500 preferably, and maybe the 4 thru .5 emulsions on leather(2 sets of strops) you would have a great…[Read more]

Sorry I jumped in so late. There was another option. The WE GO which gives you the angle matching capability and is much more versatile than the 100. I know the GO has not been available for a while so maybe it’s a mute point. I bought the PP3 last March and purchased the GO in July (received Dec.) and I have to say that there is not much the GO…[Read more]

2016 gen 3 clamp and my micro adjusters are about .4 degs different on most knives. In a perfect world it would be nice if the arms were exactly the same on both sides but we use a angle cube to determine the angle, not the bar, so it really makes no difference in the results.
I determine blade tilt early on while sharpening. You can check some…[Read more]

I started with the WE a little over a year ago and shortly there after started playing with the angles while stropping. The conventional theory was back off 2 degs. I do back of 2 degs. with leather and use a heavy pressure on some. Since Clay’s earlier post I have done a couple at the same angle as the sharpened angle and with less pressure and…[Read more]

I put a stone on the rod with a stop to hold the stone in place. Mark or note the stone where it contacts the blade directly over the clamp. Then move the stone toward the tip without moving the stone off the stop. You want the stone to stay in the same position all the way to the tip of the knife, not falling below or rising above the contact…[Read more]

sksharp replied to the topic Stone/compound and grind question… in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 8 months ago
I had at least 2 bandaids on my fingers for the first month I owned my WE! You won’t get a real nice polish on the first few knives. Your ceramic stones should finish nicely after the 1000 diamond stone then strop. The ceramic stones take quite a little while to break in and you need to take more strokes with the ceramics. I rubbed mine together…[Read more]
