As a cheap stone position holder for angle measurements you could use these, from any office supply store

I never liked the VTSA’s. They didn’t work so great for me either. I took them off my Gen 3 vise. I checked after each grit change. I now use the Gen3 Pro, so there is no VTSA, i still check after each grit. I sometimes sharpie during the progression, then check with USB scope jchange.ust to make sure im apexing. After first burr i don’t raise a…[Read more]

I have the DXL360 with .02 deg accuracy (not the S model) it does take awhile to settle but not an extreme amount of time. It is a little slow to zero, but after that it is steady. I don’t hold the gauge or the stones when i measure, i just set the stones on the knife, make an adjustment then pull stone away from knife and set back on knife to…[Read more]

Nice Pics! I agree with Justin, Marc. When i started using the edge leading sharpening motion is when i gut cut, i wear No Cry level 5 cut resistant gloves and have noticed the index finger, middle finger have been cut . I am thinking on looking at these for a replacement

Finished the repair on the Chefs knife. Used a large fine Bastard file, could not file length wise (file mostly skated), filed diagonally from handle to tip. Took quite awhile, glad knife was not a harder steel! Then used WorkSharp with a fine belt to smooth file marks out. I am happy with the results. Thanks Marc for the suggestion! Attaching…[Read more]

Thanks Marc,
I had thought of that, makes sense to save on the belts, heat buildup. Do you mean to file in direction of knife tip (say from handle to tip) or across the knife from the side?

A chef friend asked me to sharpen and repair a chefs knife that someone in the kitchen used as a pry bar, and broke the tip. It looks like some just filed the tip to maked it not jagged. I have a Ken Onion WorkSharp that i was thinking of trying to use to put a tip back on this knife, working slowly to not heat the knife up. I have included pics,…[Read more]

Paul,
Considering from where i started to where i have ended up on my WE sharpening journey. WE100, WE120, WE130, finally a Gen3 Pro. I think i would see how much a Gen3 PRO with 10″ rods, without case would cost. It already comes with 100-200, 400-600, 800-1000, this is a great starting point and for some an ending point for quite awhile. The…[Read more]

NorCalQ,
Next best to actually being there would be to make a video of your sharpening process, progression. I know its a pain in the butt, but it would show your technique, some on here would be able to tell how much pressure your using by sound, motion. Also would be reviewable by you to pick out any quirks or missteps you might be making.
