Pink, I really like the format of the notes/settings attachment you included. Is that using One Note or another app?

06/10/2018 at 9:03 am #46546Morning Marc, Yes thanks I saw that. I assumed the link I mentioned (on my Home Page) would get me to the same place as “See all Articles” on the Wicked Edge Knowledge Base main page under “General Topics”. But when the link “Articles” is clicked on on my Home Page I get nada.
The word “Articles” may be mistakenly set up as a link or perhaps it is truly busted, just thought I’d mention it as I keep clicking it hoping its going to eventually work…Just call me Pavlov’s Dog.

06/09/2018 at 12:22 pm #46535Ha Ha Ha! Funny man Marc…but…I DID!! Lol! Actually on your and other’s recommendation I got gloves and the safety shields PLUS I’m bringing in some dude from Florida to do the actual sharpening…no safety issues here! and you better believe the edges are going to be crisp!

06/09/2018 at 8:48 am #46532Unbeknownst to me MarcH had written his response here when I was querying him along similar lines off forum. It’s a great reply. Organic touched on the “counterintuitive” aspect of going back up in grit size when you change medium and abrasive.
Theres a great article in the Wicked Edge Knowledge Base about grit progression and perhaps you’ve read it but I found it incredibly helpful. For starters Clay, and I assume it was Clay, indicates a basic progression for working blades then goes on to give a progression for the Wicked Edge Mirror. Sharpening Grit Progression for All Wicked Edge Abrasives
Additionally If you want a visual idea of the “final” product of each of the Wicked Edge abrasives (and you haven’t seen it already ) Check out Grit Comparison Chart
Leaving the Wicked Edge site I found this article, Wicked Edge (WEPS) Stock Diamond & Ceramic Microscopic Progression Please note that article is more than 6 years old and may not show all the current abrasives offered by Wicked Edge. However for those abrasives he does use the author offers some helpful insights as to the thought process as he moves through his WE abrasive library. Photos are very clear and helpful. That kind of Master’s level sharpening is far beyond me. Frankly at this point I’ll be happy to crack open the box with my new WE130, find a few sweet spots, begin to break in my stones , then start sharpening kitchen knives & work folders for family and friends.
Wow talk about coincidence my Email gong just went off with an email from WE informing me my order has shipped. Next week it is! I’m excited to stop stuffing my head with the theoretical, start using what I’ve learned and begin to get my hands and handles dirty.

06/05/2018 at 5:53 pm #46511The Shapton Pro Stones are still available mounted on Wicked Edge handles from Jende Industries and Oldawan. The Pro Stones are very similar to the Shapton Glass Stones. They are also “splash and go”, not requiring a muddy slurry to exert there action, like Choseras, do. The Pro Stones are a little softer then the Glass Stones but they have a similar, predictable, consistent scratch pattern. Both Shapton Stones are consumable, that is they wear thinner and dish with use. They both need to be maintained and flattened with a lapping plate.
MarcH you constantly amaze me with your willingness and ability to enhance a thread.

06/05/2018 at 1:26 pm #46509Thanks OG, I’ve been burning up the wires and internet trying track these down. Now Jende used to have them but the link from their press announcement about the WE ShapGlass ends up at a dead page on their website. Tom at Jende is my next call…and if I can get just the stones in the grits I want I’ll buy the newer handles and mount the stones myself. As MarcH reminded me this morning the new rods on the Gen3’s are larger diameter than the old handle bores. I’d thought about it but it’s always good to get affirmation of a concern. Gracias!
06/02/2018 at 1:06 pm #46470Just so MarcH, I have no issues with a +/-0.01-0.02 degree zero either. The way it behaves on a consistent basis is what important. For me I have a mechanical issue: the effort necessary to zero and 2) I’m now seeing zero drift well above that spec and thats not good…funny its almost like it developed the zero drift after a while….maybe showing my grandson how to pulloff a backhand slap shot with it wasn’t such a reasonable test of durability… 😉 (J/K!)
Sooooo Return and Replacement initiated.
I’ve attached a color version of its manual that I found online. Much better than the little manual included with the unit.

06/02/2018 at 11:41 am #46468That doesn’t surprise me MarcH. The 360S seems to be very stable once zero’d and of course having your WEPS permanently situated lends to consistent measurements. Yes the click twice seems to be working better than the single. I’m still not getting a 00.00 reading after 2x click but 1 or 2/100ths of a degree is a pretty minimal deviation and well within their specs. Now having said that I’m still wondering if mine is simply “stiff”, its really annoying.
NOTE 2: As I started to write this response I zero’d the unit and the display was juking about 00.01 to 00.02 but now after several minutes its settled out displaying a steady 00.00…Hmmmm not quite as quick in stabilizing as I thought…Now this is where one has to serious question whether a 00.01-00.02 degree differential is all that important…probably not!…but that zero switch is definitely a pain.
06/02/2018 at 9:11 am #46466Ha! Well obviously TC my international translation thesaurus was off that day! For the life of me I couldn’t come up with the word they intended to use.
Sounds like yours has a much softer touch. Right now its taking me multiple attempts to zero the unit simply because of the button resistance. If I can’t get used to it I’ll probably ask for a replacement. I think they’ve incorporated quite a few useful features so its not a washout by any means.

06/01/2018 at 8:15 pm #46461So I coughed up the bucks for a DXL360 after reading several reviews… Well actually I used some reward points from my AMEX card so it wasn’t painful at all! The DXL 36oS unit is well made Very fast to settle into a stable reading and repeat that stable reading time after time equally fast. What is really impressive is this unit has a calibration mode that is not available on less expensive protractors. Nice! I wish the display were color simply for better contrast in bright light but white on blue isnt too bad. Guide is fairly well written although I’m still trying to figure out what “PLUMPING” is.
Note 1) The zero button on my unit is rather stiff and requires quite a bit of pressure to activate the zero. As a result you end up moving the unit quite a bit while trying to zero. My Wixey has a nice soft button easily depressed and it hardly requires much pressure to activate the “zero”…maybe it will soften up with use but rtigh now I’m not thrilled with it…

05/30/2018 at 8:35 am #46459Morning TC,
Your mention of the stabilization of the reading with less bounce (good stasis) is probably more important to me than the .05 resolution spec. Its really a pain when that reading is taking time to stabilize. Thanks again!

05/29/2018 at 10:03 am #46450Shelley my concern is for the adhesive that adheres the stone to the plastic handles and the plastic itself. I don’t know if the brake cleaner will soften the plastic but I would think it may break the adhesive down and let the stones come loose. One forum member cleaned his diamond stones with “Simple Green” degreaser / cleaner and it dissolved the adhesive and the stones came loose… I’d look for something tried and true to use like Isopropyl alcohol. I seldom if ever clean my diamond stones other then to wipe them with a dry paper towel.
Hi Shelley! I’ll chime with support for the basic sentiments expressed since your post here…nix the idea of brake cleaner entirely…I know for a fact it will affect the polyethylene plastic in the handle and more than likely dissolve the adhesive used on affixing the platen to the handle.
Simple Green, and other citrus oil based cleaners going to have the same effect on the adhesive. I recall some folks in the EU and/or Commonwealth weren’t able to get isopropyl alcohol but not sure if thats the case for you folks.
One of the other guys mentioned BarKeepers friend which is mild water soluble and surface friendly abrasive. Thumbs up on that stuff! You might see if you can get some through your New Zealand Amazon store. I’ve used it on multiple surfaces with very satisfactory results including some large diamond stones I have for hand sharpening (which I’ll probably never use again now that I have a WE on the way! lol) At any rate Shelley best wishes and good luck with your new WE!
Edit: Bar Keeper’s Friend …Shelley, Amazon really reams us for this product online (as is typical these days) but I posted the link for your visual reference. It’s so highly thought of that it may be available for less than $5USD on the shelves of your local grocery store or whatever store you might have like a Walmart or Target. Best George

05/28/2018 at 4:32 pm #46445- 12″ guide rods
- Safety shields and/or cut resistant gloves
- Another set on strops and diamond emulsion
- Extra coarse diamond stone set
- Super fine ceramic stones and/or Micro fine ceramic stones
- Ceramic stones for curved blade
- 2 pairs blank glass platens
- Diamond lapping films: 3µ, 1.5µ, 1.0µ, and 0.5µ, (several sheets of each)
A great guide to any beginner Sultan, I should know, I am one! My own basic needs are to sharpen kitchen knives and those of my family and friends.
Based on my own needs I bought the WE130 w/ Aluminum Base and the following from MarcH’s list above.
- 12″ Rods
- Safety Shields
- Safety Gloves I did buy these Amazon to save a few$
- Extra Fine 800 & Ultra Fine 1000 Diamond Set
My Wish list in order of need and budget
- (14/10 MICRON DIAMOND AND LEATHER STROPS PACK)
- Ceramics set(s) as yet unidentified
MarcH has outlined a dream set for just about any contingency you can think. My own purchases are based own needs and I would simply suggest thinking seriously about what it is YOU want to do. It’s very easy to become caught up in the desire/need/ of mirror finishes. I personally don’t feel the need for those on my working knives. Now having said that and having just had a similar conversation here on the board I think I would use the strops set identified in a few instances. If my extended family or friends want want a mirror edge they can buy me the necessary accessories! lol!
Good luck and happy dreaming!
George
