How do we know what we think we know about knife sharpness? Spend a couple of hours on YouTube and you will be exposed to many contradictory assertions, usually based on anecdotal evidence.
Let’s assume normal cutting tasks. No chopping, whacking, or otherwise wrecking things. Mike Stewart of Bark River Knives insists that a convex edge will…[Read more]

I’m fascinated by what I’m seeing. Two jigs in series? Is this for longer knives and tools?

I’m new here and don’t claim to be an expert, but I’ve never seen a mirror finish that didn’t show scratch marks under magnification.

I’m sure you experienced users are way ahead of me on this, but I found this to be interesting. For me, his entire channel has been the subject of study recently. Granted, he’s a Tormek user, so many of the techniques don’t directly translate to the WE, but some of the larger sharpening principles are universal. In this video he demonstrates…[Read more]

Thank you for sharing that. I think it is a valuable lesson. If D2 is semi-stainless, then my poor O1 tool steel would certainly perish!

What’s your take on DLF vs leather strops? Most of my sharpening experience has been with the KME. Those lapping films never really impressed me, but the WE is obviously a different animal. I do use the 3 micron DLF in my progression before ceramics and strops. Should I invest in more?
I’m generally not a fan of micro bevels on thicker blades.…[Read more]

Modernflame replied to the topic Low Angle Adapter Off Center? in the forum Main Forum 4 years, 4 months ago
There is no connection except that using the low angle adapter and/or the Tormek jig require the use of micro adjustment, which I was unable to do at the time. I had used thread locker to prevent the screws from coming loose. I’ve since removed the thread locker and have ordered parts that will fix the problem permanently.

I’d be interested in a real life example. I don’t have the precision measuring equipment and I think I may need a better angle cube. My angle cube has a margin of error of +/-0.2, which is a country mile on this level of measurement. To you fellas who have this process dialed in, would you mind recording your settings next time you clamp up a…[Read more]

Success! I took a few photos, but this gen 3 Wicked Edge is remarkably well made. I admire anything that was engineered to be disassembled and maintained by the end user. Simple, durable components with a minimum of parts. I also got rid of the blue thread locker and am planning an upgrade. I believe the quality of this machine more than justifies…[Read more]

I’m also a Tormek user and I have the small knife adapter. The difficulty comes when the spine thickness of the blade differs from the thickness of that plank that goes into the clamp. Basically, what I take from all of this is that my thread locker solution to the problem of the wandering micro adjust is not going to work.

My LAA is significantly off center, regardless of which way it’s clamped in my gen 3. Is this normal?

Another concern I have is reassembling the device in such a way that the guide rods remain in exactly the same relationship to each other. Right now, the measured angle on each side is within my angle cube’s margin of error. I don’t have a micro adjust feature. Am I in for more pain?

I’ve got the PDF for disassembling the vise, but it presupposes that it’s been removed from the base. The only thing I could find on YouTube was a dude who took apart his WE 130. I think I can handle the vise. I’m nervous about dismounting it from the blue, angle marked base plate because I don’t know what parts lie beneath. Truthfully, it all…[Read more]

This is my Hinderer XM18 3.5″ Vintage in O1 tool steel. Gave it a wicked edge yesterday. I didn’t get quite the mirror shine that I would like, but I know it’s because my stones haven’t fully broken in yet. It’s beveled at 22.5 degrees per side, which is obtuse for a cutting tool, but these thicker blades look oversharpened if you use a more acute…[Read more]

Nah, I used blue loc tite. I can definitely get the screws back out if I want to. Mine is the new gen 3. I love the machine and hope to resolve the issue. From what I can tell, the wicked edge haters on the internet are angry about how other people spend their money. I’m definitely not in that category. The 24 hour cure time is almost over. I’m…[Read more]

I am not a fussy customer. If a restaurant messes up my order, I’m the cool sort of dude who will smile, eat it, and leave a big tip. Life is short. You’ve got to let stuff slide. With that said, I would like to articulate my grievance with the gen 3 wicked edge. I spent $1500 on the machine with accessories <i>only to discover that this is not a…[Read more]

Modernflame replied to the topic Micro-Adjust Question in the forum Welcome Mat 4 years, 4 months ago
Any update on this? I’m new to the WE and have only sharpened a few knives. Today I worked up the courage to sharpen a Hinderer XM18, but the micro adjust screws on my gen 3 come loose instantly. Even after 10 or 15 gentle, slow passes, the screws have loosened and changed the angle significantly. My first thought was to wrap the micro adjust…[Read more]
