Hi, just as an admin note from a forum moderator… This post made it in twice, and so I’ve closed the duplicate post.

Hi Todd, thanks for the feedback. That’s a good suggestion; I’ve disabled the recaptcha for logins for existing users. If it turns out that this allows a way for spammers to get in, we may have to reenable it, but here’s hoping it works.

Idea… We should add a field to link to youtube videos, or other video hosting, as I do see a lot of people post knife-specific videos. And then you take your settings (angles, progression, etc.) and add that to the form.

I think those fields are intended as ‘free text’ entries where you could a) put a quantitive value in the field, and b) explain that value in the corresponding field that allows notes. But, those are legacy fields that harken back to a previous version of the form, and they make not make sense in the current version.
Please everyone, send…[Read more]

I just replied to a customer support ticket, from a forum user frustrated by the image challenge delivered by reCAPTCHA during login.
I thought I would share my reply below, and also add a bit data about how frequent the issue of spammers is. In other words, we don’t take it lightly that the reCAPTCHA can be a massive pain in donkey, but overall…[Read more]

For those not familiar with it, in the past we’ve provided a database of user-submitted sharpening settings for specific knives. And, a form for users to submit into it, including a picture of the knife, settings used (angles), and additional info.
The database is once again available. Apologies that it disappeared when we moved to our new…[Read more]

So that ‘Articles’ link takes a bit of explaining. It’s actually the equivalent of a ‘tab’ in our support platform. Meaning, it’s possible for there to be different categories of support items listed under Recent items. But, we don’t use any of the other categories, we just use Articles. So, it looks out of place there, but if we had other types…[Read more]

Just an fyi, that there are some gremlins running around the inner workings of the forum. For example, one person is unable to attach images, and editing that reply just generates a blank page (whereas it works normally for editing other replies). And I’m getting errors when I try to load some admin pages that usually work fine.
So, please let me…[Read more]

Spell checking is really a function of the browser these days, which gives a single source of spell check for any website you go to. Here’s where to find it in Chrome, my browser of choice.

I help monitor the forum, and relatively tech savvy. I guess I don’t get the joke.

Hi Expidia, thanks for the feedback. I’ll be upfront and say it’s not something we’ll be able to change, as it’s a built-in way that our forum software works, i.e. not something we can customize. We use bbpress, a popular forum plugin for wordpress. We’ve customized some aspects of it, but that’s usually adding-on rather than modifying the way it…[Read more]

Yep, sorry about that, but this spammer made it through. We have been pretty successful at blocking the spammers for the past couple months, but every now and then one of them is willing to put in the effort to make it through the defenses. It’s definitely annoying, but we can’t provide anything 100% effective against the spammers, without making…[Read more]

So in a couple of tests, things worked normally for my new user accounts, meaning I was able to post without being asked for an ID. But I’ll keep on the lookout in case this happens again to a new user.

Hi Robert, it’s great to have you in the forum!
For your question, about needing a member ID, I’m the guy who should be able to answer that question. And ‘should be’ is the key phrase here, because I’m not sure how or why it asked you for an ID! We have made some changes to the forum recently, so odd things can definitely happen.
I appreciate…[Read more]

The evening of 2/6/2018, starting around 9:30 pm MST, the forum will be temporarily unavailable. You’ll see a “site is under maintenance’ page for some period of time, as the DNS records are changed to point to our new wordpress hosting.
We’re doing this to prevent any new topics or new users getting ‘stranded’ on the old server. We take a…[Read more]

We’ll still be on wordpress, just different servers and different backend support.
I’m not sure why it wouldn’t recognize my address, I haven’t changed anything on my profile, and currently we’re still on the same hosting.

We’re moving the forum to a new hosting company. We’re doing this to get a higher level of customer support for our ‘backend’ wordpress needs.
In a perfect world, this change will be ‘invisible’ to forum users; everything should look and work exactly the same.
But… It’s more likely we’ll hit a couple of glitches, which we’ll work quickly to…[Read more]
