Marc H replied to the topic Miyabi Birchwood Chef’s Knife Sharpening Tips for Newbie??? in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 2 years, 2 months ago
You can elevate the vise by installing a “riser block” between the vise and the blue base plate where it mounts. This will allow you to achieve lower angle settings before the stones impact the jaws. You may need longer guide rods with the riser block.
My experience with Miyabi knives is they are a typical “V” grind bevel. The only way to…[Read more]

Bingo! I now remember seeing that diagram when I ordered it, but it had been a while when I finally got around to starting it up and there was nothing like it in the instructions. Thanks for the help, guys!

Yup, that’s why I assumed it would work with my PC. Even in the instructions (which are printed so small I needed the microscope to read it) it implies that it should work with Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 and 11, which to me means PC compatible. Maybe the caveat is that it’s WiFi with smart phone and USB with PCs. I don’t think it says specifically th…[Read more]

Well that explains it!
Hmm… I can mirror my smart phone to my smart TVs, so I wonder if… No, probably not, but maybe I can find a cheap smart TV about 31″ to replace the monitor…
Thanks, guys!

Thanks for the quick reply, Richard. I’ve got about ten other WiFi or LAN devices which are showing up on the device and network lists, but not the camera. I recently switched over to a new hughesnet modem/router and it’s not letting me get direct access to the WiFi data at the modem. I’ll call Hughesnet this afternoon to see if I can get a p…[Read more]

Based on the scope’s product descriptions and my experience with this type of scope it connects via wifi direct to tablets or smart phones. Not through a home network/router. Only wired via USB to computers.

I was watching some TV show with my wife which was about helping people with hair problems and saw them using a WiFi handheld ‘scope to examine some hair. I snapped to attention when I realized how quickly and how easily the hair shafts came into focus – not easy to do with a few free-standing hairs which aren’t in a fixed plane of reference. A…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Mounting screws? in the forum Main Forum 2 years, 3 months ago
Keith, I usually put stick-on or screw-on rubber bumper feet on the bottom of the base. They cushion it from scratching the table, help keep the base from sliding and make it easier to slide your fingertips underneath the base to lift it up to move it, by raising it slightly up off the table.

The WE130 mounts with two 10-32 machine screws inserted up through the base from underneath.

You don’t buy a Ferrari when you’re learning how to drive. Because, if you were to learn how to drive on a Ford Escort you’ll be confused when you eventually drive well enough to drive the Ferrari.
I stand by the recommendations of all those who came before me and taught me so I can try to help you. Learn how to sharpen on junk or cheap knives…[Read more]

David, welcome to the W.E. forum. It’s recommended you start your sharpening experience with beater knives. Something relegated to bottom of a kitchen junk drawer. It’s better to practice on knives that are in need of sharpening. A thrift store is a good source for practice knives. This is because all the new diamond. sharpening stones need…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Angles not wide / large enough? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 2 years, 3 months ago
I would say if the amount of effort you’re expending seems excessive to remove the edge damage with the 100 grit as you’re getting started after matching the bevel angles with the marker technique…then 800 grit may not be where I’d start… it all depends on the steel’s hardness and the extent of the damage you’re looking to remove. For…[Read more]

I’m guessing tcmeyer is not assessing Ribstabsheart’s edge damage as being significant which is why Tom’s recommending the 800 grit method and thinks the file is a “bad idea”. Possibly, tcmeyer thinks the edge damage can be removed easily and the original profile recued.
I have used a hand-held file horizontally/longitudinally across a damaged…[Read more]

It only takes a very few strokes with an 800-grit stone to flatten an edge. I think using a regular file is a bad idea.
