Marc H replied to the topic Using the Depth Key in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 12 months ago
Welcome Russ, many of the W.E. users do use a digital angle cube to set the bevel angles. The inscribed numbers on the sharpener are as you said strictly for reference and may be irrelevant except in the 5/8″ situation.
I use the depth key strictly to mount the alignment guide or the advanced alignment guide to record positioning references in…[Read more]

Now that you’ve gained experience sharpening a few knives with your W.E. it becomes easier to recognize areas on the knife edge that are more challenging to sharpen. The extremes of a knife, the tips and the heels, are often the edge portions where it’s more difficult to match the flat sharpening stones to these blade contours.

Marc H replied to the topic Very frustrating. First EDC knife in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 3 years, 12 months ago
Why it’s that way?
A 60/40 or 70/30 uneven or asymmetrical beveled knife is sharpened that way intentionally.

The bevel angle doesn’t really have anything to do with it. Whether it’s 13°, 18° or 25°, it’s about technique, effort, consistency and attention to detail. It may take you a good deal of practice, and for your stones to get broken in.
You can’t discern a difference between 13.1°and 13.2° when it’s done properly. Even 1/2° or more differenc…[Read more]

A knife can be ground on both sides the same. That is a “V” grind with equal bevel angles on both sides of the knife. It still can be a left handed or right handed knife determined by the shape of the knife’s handle.

I’m in agreement with everything Tom says..
The 27° degree angle that Kyle stated he was using was from a glance down at the Gen 3 Pro’s angle setting lever’s position relative to the white printed angle deliniations on the blue semi-circular base plate. This was after he decided he was matching the existing profile. That angle reading alone h…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Reprofiling with WE 130 in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years ago
Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, “david”.
To actually thin a knife down, behind the edge, like you’re describing is generally attempting to use a more acute angle setting then can be achieved with your WE130. At that low of an angle setting your sharpening stones will probably contact the vise and/or jaws before the stones will impact the edge…[Read more]

No disrespect to Kyle. He’s providing exactly the service his customers are asking and paying for.
There’s fast, there’s good and there’s cheap…there’s not all three:

There can be different goals when sharpening for a business. This needs to be decided and defined up front.
Are you offering your sharpening services simply to produce a sharpened knife for utility sake, as Kyle has described he’s doing.
Or, are your sharpening services like those of Josh of Razor Edge Knives.
Or both? This will describe the…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic When sharpening a knife how do you know what stones to start with in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years ago
Here is what I wrote earlier in this same thread to answer Kenneth’s same question:
For me the finest grit stone that’ll get the reprofile job is often only the 400 grit. Sometimes I’ll need to go all the way down to the 100 grit. I have owned the 50/80 grit pair for a year or two now and needed to use them twice.

Marc H replied to the topic Using simple green and a brush to clean stones in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 4 years ago
Simple Green is not recommended. This cleaner has been reported by W.E. users to dissolve and loosen the adhesive used to attach the sharpening stones to the plastic paddles.

Marc H replied to the topic Anyone know anything about this Laser Edge Finder on Amazon in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years ago
It takes a good amount of practice to figure out how to use the W.E. well. Maybe a good 10 knives or more. It’s not hard to use the Gen 3 Pro, but it’s not simple either. It also takes 8 or 10 knives worth of sharpening to just begin to get your sharpening stones broken in to where they’ll begin to yield good consistent results.
It’s su…[Read more]

Possibly you could post a photo of this situation you are describing or maybe explain what you mean by choke up in some other works.
First thing you need to do is forget about the angle numbered demarcations on the blue semi-circular plate. All that matters is that the angle you want, to be the angle reading you get with your digital cube. …[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Is Stropping the same as using lapping? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years ago
No. Lapping films are just an ultrafine diamond sharpening stone. It’s best to use them in an edge following stroke, that is up and off the knife edge. This is the the same stroke used with the strops.
