Which model hard case is best for that model may be a question easily answered by W.E. customer service.  I’d give them a call or submit a ticket.

Do you have any other fine grit plates?  Like the 3000 grit?  Are you seeing this concavity across all your fine grit stones; each and everyone of them; (1500, 2200, 3000)?

That pictured Forshner knife, I would clamp it high up in the jaws.  Center the knife’s length, forward and aft.  With it’s length centered, slightly rotate the handle down and the tip up.  I do this to try to even out the arched shape of the cutting edge so it lays centered for the most part, across the vise.

I agree with Tom, replacement is the best way to go to be assured of the results.  If not replaced, you’ll never be confident in the results you’ll see.

Have you tried “Saddle Soap” some places that sell horse supplies have it, and some shoe stores.

I did a little internet searching some time back and saw there are some sources for tanned Kangaroo hide.  I never got further than that.

The nano is an interesting alternative because it can be rinsed out when dirty.

Believe it not, I do it the same way.  I don’t care much if my bevel heights across a sharpened edge change.  Keeness, sharp edges and repeatability for future touchups are all that really matter to me for my practical purposes.

Tom, I believe that is what I wrote.

If it’s from the bottom jacking screw it’s probably a heli-coil insert. A tightly torqued jacking screw exerts a lot of force on the threads.  As long as it tightens and the vise works well I would just use it.  If it fails at some point W.E. customer service will take care of any issues.

Tape applied to the knife sides should protect the knife steel from unwanted damage from inadvertent, unintentional damage from steel dust that falls on the knife that’s shed with sharpening or that gets rubbed across the knives trapped on your fingertips as you handle the sharpening stones.  New stones will shed abrasive dust also as they are…[Read more]

BTW, if you can’t find flat hex socket head screws at your hardware store Phillips flat head screws can be used.  All that matters is 10/32 and the length you need.  Don’t buy screws that are too long because if the heads sticks or ends stick out too far your sharpening stones may hit the screws.

On the standard vises, WE100, and WE120 models, both vise screws, top and bottom, are removable, (if without unexpected defects), and interchangeable with suitably sized longer screws.
