Many knives from the manufacturer are freehand sharpened, and because the tip area also moves into thicker metal, it’s often sharpened at a higher angle to make everything look even. It may take a bit in the initial sharpening on the WE to get it “adjusted” to sharpening at a precise angle.
+1 as well Curtis
I had often wondered why some of my tips have a wider bevel occasionally, and what you just posted makes PERFECT sense…………..thank you for that as I had no idea, but now I do. :cheer:
10/28/2013 at 9:53 pm #15513I agree, very cool Leo……….thanks for posting. :cheer:
10/25/2013 at 3:38 pm #15480like your dime idea Dan………….much cheaper than mine, LOL. 😆
10/25/2013 at 3:35 pm #15479Morning Max…………I had the same issue on mine, and I had a local machine shop mill a hole in mine, mill and insert a stainless steel disc, that is just slightly press fitted, and removable should I ever need to change it out.
The way they made it removable was to drill a smaller hole ( like 1/16 or 1/8″ approx. ) all the way through the jaw, before milling the bigger hole to insert the stainless disc. Now, if the disc wears, I can just take a small punch, nail, etc….and drive out the damaged disc and replace as necessary. I also had them mill the hole for the disc just slightly shallower than the thickness of the disc, to give me just a tad bit more clamping power on the bigger / heavier knives.
So far, it has worked like a charm ! ( and he did it for beer and pizza….doesn’t get any better than that ) :woohoo:
Attachments:10/25/2013 at 3:17 pm #15476thanks for all the comments guys…..Rubicon, you mentioned a video, but I did not see one attached or a link ?
10/25/2013 at 3:13 pm #15475WOW……………beautiful job on that case ! That things just about too nice to get steel dust on, LOL. 😆
10/23/2013 at 9:26 pm #15431There is “room for growth” in the WE case… it comes with slots for 10 stone sets, and a few cutouts for accessories, and room to cut a few more if you needed. A few points if you decide to make your own that the WE case provides that I would consider is…. it keeps everything organized, very well protected, and, other than removing the arms, you don’t have to disassemble the sharpener to transport or store it (including the PPII setup).
Gary, I have the PPII and did go ahead and buy the W.E.custom case…………and don’t regret it at all….it protects everything very, very well, and is easily transportable, although a bit heavy with everything in it.
10/21/2013 at 9:28 pm #15409Big welcome to the forum Gary ! You WILL NOT be disappointed in the edges attained using the WEPS system as you will get insane, screaming sharp edges, I guarantee.
I have had my propack 2 system for less than a year now, and am still amazed every time I sharpen anything. Good luck digesting the info, and if I can, I would suggest getting the most system you can afford to start off with, as you will quickly want to add more and more stones, and to be honest, this isn’t the cheapest system out there, but is IMHO……………….The Absolute Best ! :cheer:
10/17/2013 at 3:12 pm #15341Cool, Eamon! Really interested in your experiences.
In addition to the questions asked above, I’d really like to know whether the jump from 600 grit to 1200 grit is not too large.
Like I said though I shoot this much in ammo at least once a week and with that all I have is empty brass.[/quote]
Eamon, that’s not entirely true about empty brass………….you also get the satisfaction of knowing you still have the 2nd amendment rights to do that in this great country, and the satisfaction of knowing you are honing your skills and building muscle memory that will come as an ” automatic ” response if and when you should ever need them………..Heaven forbid you don’t though.
10/16/2013 at 3:30 pm #15333I couldn’t agree more…………….LOVE, LOVE, my WEPS PP2……..:woohoo:
10/14/2013 at 9:39 pm #15296that is some BEAUTIFUL knives right there……….thanks for posting this Johnny.
I also liked the cut test at the end………now, how many of you are going to rush home tonight and try this, or already trying it, LOL. :silly: :woohoo:
10/14/2013 at 9:18 pm #15295Nice looking edge Tomas…………how did the sharpness of the edge hold up after stropping on the tormek ?
10/11/2013 at 1:11 am #15260I kinda like the scratched look of the larger bevel too…………..give is a cool look and contrasts niceley with the polished main edge bevel. :cheer:
10/10/2013 at 9:08 pm #15257I think the green paste is 3.5 microns, and here is what I googled about the Flexcut Gold
Before you use the Flexcut compound you should read their website
What is the grit size (in microns) of the abrasive in your Flexcut Gold Polishing Compound.
Answer
As with all polishing compound, that is a hard question to give a definitive answer. Some of the particle sizes go as small as .6 microns, some are much larger. If they were all .6 micron, it would cut much too slowly. Polishing is a very different process than grinding or sanding. Some of the other factors involved are: What kind of binder is used to carry the abrasive? – What is the material that it is being applied to (leather, felt, wood, etc.)? – What is the abrasive made of?
What we here at SRP have found in many of these bar type compounds, is the purity which doesn’t matter to much for tools, can create problems with razors…
I know Lynn tried this stuff out for awhile on a web strop and said it worked ok…
Most of us use much more pure compounds no matter the type, the Flexcut gold is compared sometimes to Cerium because of the color but pure Cerium Oxide is a smaller grit and very soft so it is more of a smoother not a cutter…
The most universal paste used for razors is the CrOx .50 Green spray or Crayon but it is much more pure than the Veritas bar that you find at wood working places…
The harder the surface you use it on, the harsher the outcome on the edge regardless of type…
Basically it goes Balsa, Leather, Linen/Webbing and softest being Felt…
I hope that helped some…
10/10/2013 at 9:01 pm #15256Nice knife Jack……………….that handle material reminds me of the old Frost Cutlery stuff. Is that who this one is made by, Frost ?
