Josh, is there any difference in technique loading the nano cloth strops and using them as compared to regular old cow leather strops? (I got it, the same angle as sharpening angle). How much pressure do you exert? What kind of care and maintenance is required with the nano cloth? Anything else you can share? Thanks

Thanks for sharing that (Ronin). The elusive “mirror” edge doesn’t count for squat if it isn’t really effective, first! Beyond anything else.

Yes I can see there from those pictures it is the grind line! I’m was feeling bad for you. All that work for the steel to fracture would suck. That’s a nice knife Bill. Looks like a real work horse. I like the handle too. Looks like a “Gorilla” tape sheath! LOL

Sorry to bum you out. Some use as a basic progression 100/200, 400/600, 800/1000, finished off with leather strops.
Many of us use: 100/200, 400/600, 800/1000, 1500/6µ (dlf), then finished with a 2 strop progression (5µ/3.5 and/or 4µ/2µ, and/or 1.0µ/0.5µ).
As Organic said above most everyone we encounter here, once they see how well they do…[Read more]

Thanks Alan, To help avoid cross contamination, it’d probably be prudent to label the covers used on the strop platens so they get used repeatedly only with the strop grit it’s labeled to match.

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Stone / Strop protective covers in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 6 years, 6 months ago
Alan it looks like they’re designed to have a little space between the plastic cover and the strop surface, so not to have direct contact, when place onto the platens. Is that a correct observation?

Casey if you purchased just the WE130 Sharpener it only comes with 2 stone pairs. There certainly are many more regularly used abrasives and other accessories and adapters you’ll find you’ll want once you get started.
I believe when you purchase just the sharpener (without a mounting base) the mounting hole template may be included. I would c…[Read more]

Bill, sorry to ask, is this a blade fracture? Or just a shadow from the grind line?

Actually, I think when you compare what you get, (i.e., all components, supplies and accessories considered), for what you’ll pay, all the systems, (Pro Pack 2, Pro Pack 3 and Gen 3 Pro) are relatively even in price.

Josh, which strop medium do you prefer? (Cow leather, Kangaroo, or Nano Cloth). Just to verify, you said you strop down to 0.25µ or did you mean to write 0.025µ? How much of an angle decrease do you come off the sharpening angle when you are stropping? Thanks

Welcome to our Wicked Edge Forum Casey. The level of where the stone meets the knife determines how much of the length of the stone can be used for a sharpening stroke. This a characteristic of the size, shape and depth or height of the knife blade your clamping and sharpening. Small narrower knives like everyday carries will, like you said, ma…[Read more]

I’m much happier with the 1500. The abrasive action of the 1500 is more consistent and I have used it for a long time. I felt the 3 micron lost it scratch rather quickly so I can’t say the “friction” level compares. Sorry. Given the choice between the two I’d go with the 1500 grit.

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Syd. That is the earlier version high grit diamond stone that WE had offered in combination with the blank glass platen, before they switched to the 1500 grit Diamond stones. That’s another way of saying “old stock”. It did work “OK”. The stone didn’t have the longevity the newer 1500 grit stone has. For the…[Read more]

I want to apologize to William and the Forum for the tangent and side discussion taken while I attempted to answer what should have been a relatively simple question about basic sharpening technique. I am probably guilty of sharing too much detail and theory when a more simple and concise answer may have sufficed. Whenever I have the o…[Read more]

Tom, we are both right. It can mean exactly what you are saying where the % designation relates to the physical grind and the apex is offset. It can also mean that the angle is the same but 70% of the sharpening time and effort is spent on one side and 30% is spent to the other side. Here is an explanation made to me by a professional knife…[Read more]

Most knives I buy, I find upon inspection have unmatched bevels, side to side. I buy mostly hand forged/hand made kitchen knives so that’s to be expected since they’re hand sharpened. As long as the bevels apex the knife edge and meet at a very precise keen line the knives usually will perform very well.
Most knives I buy are specified as “…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum and community DeaconBlues. Good choice on the PP3. Results to your liking will come soon enough. There is a bit of a learning curve. While you’re learning your stones will be breaking in, too. The hardest thing for a beginner to do is know when the knife side bevel is continuous all the way up to the knif…[Read more]

Just matters that it’s level and that your point of reference is the same point used again and again to lay the rod arms to this same point for consistency in the readings. The exercise is to see how the screw adjustments are used to get your readings on the whole and 1/2 degree angle readings as measured with the digital cube. I believe y…[Read more]
