Like Tom’s, my 2200/3000 grits aren’t broken in yet. If they come around, when they are finally broken in, and behave as well as the original 1500 grit diamond stones do, then I look forward to what they’ll bring to an all diamond stone progression.
Nobody can tell you whether the investment is worth it to you, Justin. Only you know exactly w…[Read more]

Justin, the tendency I see is that sharpeners try to do is lump all the different mediums together in one lone progression. They want to use everyone of their stones to sharpen and then polish the knife. The problem is that the different medium’s grits are often classified and rated by different scales so they don’t necessarily compare and fit t…[Read more]

I have used a new 0.243/6 bronze brush to clean the paddle bore holes of injection molding or glue debris on new paddles that are binding on the guide rods. It always worked well and did no damage.

I tie some kind of strong string in a circle that when flattened is like 12″ long. Then I loop a strip of gun rag like 4″ x 1/2″ folded over the string. I hook an opened and flattened paper clip over the string loop to serve as a narrow weight and drop that clip down through the paddle hole. Then grab the paper clip and the string loop at the…[Read more]

If my guide rods feel dragging, that is, if the sharpening stones are not sliding as freely as they once had, I wipe the guide rods down with a silicone impregnated “gun rag”. I also check to verify the guide rods are screwed down hand tight into the guide rod ball joint ends. I also will pull a small strip of the gun rag, on a string, th…[Read more]

rummels, sharpening is a repetitive process fo me. Grit after grit I repeat the same routine with the same technique again and again. The culmination of the repeated steps yields my sharpened edge. This you know.
I test the knife edge with each grit for sharpness. First, as I believe I’m making progress I test the edge for sharpness with…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Using 50/80 stones in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 5 months ago
Whetstones like Choseras and Shaptions don’t need a “break-in” period. They do however need to be maintained for trueness and flatness by lapping on a plate. They are also consumable and they can break if dropped. Whetstones are more expensive. They do need to be used with water; thus the namesake. Everything has a positive and a negat…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Adapter Caps for Non Magnetic Stones in the forum Want to Sell 5 years, 5 months ago
I like to set up my two adapters on both stones to start. Then I just swap the cube from side to side. This lets me quickly double check my angles if I want to without having to remove the one adapter and swap it from side to side.
For me swapping out the stones as I progress through the grits, double checking guide rod angle settings and m…[Read more]

Are you talking about a butterfly knife, where the handle splits and folds oppositely to expose the center blade?

Marc H replied to the topic At which angles do you sharpen your scissors? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 5 months ago
Try just holding the scissors in you fingers to orient the bevel in a position relative to the sharpening stone. Move the hand held scissors in relation to the paddle. Flip the scissors over and all around till you find a position that allows you to work with them. Lay the stone against the scissor edge while you hold the scissors in your ha…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic At which angles do you sharpen your scissors? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 5 months ago
You may need to flop the scissors over so what is now facing down is instead facing up and the point is towards you. Then the scissors will be held a different angle relative to the guide rods. This will give you different angle combinations to work with. Between clamping the scissors differently, one side up or the other, and changing the ad…[Read more]

Richard, can you move the scissors closer to you so the clamp is holding the blade in the tip of the adapter instead holding the center body of the scissors. This will change the slant of the scissors. Then try to work with that.
By clamping the scissor by the blade you may be able to better work with the angle on the blade and let it work w…[Read more]

Scissors are a strange beast. The designs are all over the place. I found using the adapter it take some improvising to make it work for me with some scissor designs. If you could post a picture to actually illustrate your set-up/clamping configuration it may help us to help you. Based on your explanation, I suggest you insert some sort of fla…[Read more]

I agree with dulledge. You can, though, have a combination of a very fine sharp cutting edge with some very fine toothiness for slicing. A balance.
Even 3000 grit stones used edge leading can leave a micro toothy edge.
