Marc H replied to the topic Best WE setup for a beginner? in the forum Getting Started 5 years ago
Just to be clear, umeuph, all W.E. models use the same stones and accessories. (Except the stand alone portable WEGO model, that you’re not interested in). That means any sharpening stones and accessories you buy with your beginning model will also work with another model if you choose to start inexpensive and upgrade later.
The earlier mo…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum “umeuph”. If you would share with us the kind of knives you’re wanting to sharpen it would help us to help you. By this I mean: kitchen or chef’s knives, or pocket/folding knives, or craft knives like wood carving knives or leather tooling, or chisels and plane blades. Are you looking for an inclusive setup or to buy…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Problem with clamping my XM-18 Spanto in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 5 years, 1 month ago
Matt, the standard included jaw set are only capable to expand to 3/16″. The XM-18 Spanto approaches this width at 0.16″.
Another remedy to consider may be to disassemble the vise and clean out any steel dust with a clean dry towel and a can of air spray. Then sand and polish the steel surfaces of the cam lobe with very fine grit sand paper o…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Creating a burr in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 5 years, 1 month ago
The primary bevel is the angle the knife edge has been, or, is being sharpened to. This bevel is from the knife blades edge shoulder up to the knife edge. A burr formed while sharpening is a telltale indicator that your sharpening efforts have been thorough, correct, effective and you’re reaching or apexing the knife edge.
It’s is said by some…[Read more]

Howard, Which model sharpener are you using?
As tcmeyer wrote, for me too, consistency is key.
The single most important lesson anyone can apply is to be consistent in everything you do. Consistent in your set angle from from grit to grit, and medium to medium. I do this by checking and making appropriate angle adjustments with each and ev…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Guidance needed on next 2 stone (strop) to get in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 1 month ago
Every finer stone added to your sharpening progression will refine, smooth and improve the preciseness of the bevel’s intersection at the apex. When done with good proper sharpening technique, this can result in improved edge sharpness and a more polished appearance. The level of edge refinement you seek is a personal thing that goes beyond s…[Read more]

That board certainly is a beast. Just like I uses a different style and size knife for a specific purpose, I also have and use a different size and type of cutting board to best match the job at hand.

I share Organic’s opinion. I finish each knife I sharpen with at least the 4micron/2micron strop combo.

Edward, even if you undertake an engineer’s based study to determine your sharpening stone paddle inconsistencies, stone mounting inconsistencies and parallel bore hole inconsistencies, or, you simply apply your magnetic digital cube to measure the set angles each time. The bottom line is small or micro-adjustments made with each and every grit…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum and community 45srbest. All W.E sharpeners are a machined precision hand tools that will allow you to securely clamp and sharpen your knife blades well and repeatedly. Once you learn how to operate it. The WE130 is a good choice and my individual favorite model.
We experienced users, use our W.E. sharpeners to cr…[Read more]

Michael, these answers are my opinions based on my experiences and may not be necessarily the absolute truth.
Some steels sharpen very easily to a very sharp edge even though they are very hard and durable steels. High carbon steel like Japanese Aogami Super is an example.
Softer steels within reason seem to sharpen well and easiely unless…[Read more]

Edward, I don’t want to spend your money but, the WE130 Gen 3 vise upgrade is certainly the way to go. This will remove the clamping lean associated with the standard vise used in the WE100 and WE 120. It is easier and faster to use and more consistent. It also includes a tension adjusting feature.
On the double sided knife you’re sha…[Read more]

Edward, The Wicked Edge is designed and machine very precisely to maintain the sharpening angle across the blade length when operated correctly. Realize that the individual grinds and the steel thickness on knives may vary across the length of the knife blades. Some knives may be ground thinner towards the knife’s tip to allow for fine and det…[Read more]

Ed, both strokes, the down and on, “edge leading” and, the up and off, ” edge trailing” have a place in sharpening with the Wicked Edge. You’ll need to use both of these strokes in a systematic manner. Then decide for yourself based on your results, which stroke you prefer and how you prefer to utilize them in your sharpening technique. Th…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Edward Riley.
I always check my angle settings with each and every new grit I’m using in my sharpening progressions. If it is not set at the initial setting, 18 degrees in your case, I re-adjust and lock it in at 18 degrees through the entire sharpening process. This insures your final profile is the same a…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Howard. If you are re-profiling the bevel, that is changing the bevel angle from what it was originally, this may require a lot of steel removal till the new bevel is ground from the shoulder to the knife edge. This is the issue especially when lowering the bevel angle on the new profile. Depending on how mu…[Read more]

SVan, all of the Wicked Edge models worked very well and will produce a very fine, very sharp, mirrored polished knife edge repeatedly, once the user learns how to use the sharpeners, well. All models do have their limitations and at the same time they excel in some areas better then other models. Not anyone model is perfect or necessarily b…[Read more]
