That could be a reason if they are using too much pressure with the diamond stones. Diamond stones don’t need a lot of pressure. I use only enough pressure to keep the stones flat and even against the edge of the blade. It does take practice though. I used to catch myself applying too much pressure occasionally.

I’m a doubting Thomas when it comes to this ‘mythical’ Japanese steel. Until someone actually proves that the steel is as hard as they are claimed to be and that diamond stones ruins the edges, then I don’t believe it. It seems to me that the harder that a steel is the better that diamond stones would work.
I’m waiting for someone to prove it…

It seems to me that the harder that a steel is the better that diamond stones would work. I question the actual hardness of those types of knives. I don’t believe that they are as hard as claimed. I have some knives that measure between 50 – 55RC according to my Tsubosan files and my diamond stones rip the steel off like it’s nothing. Maybe the…[Read more]

Thanks, Marc. I sanded the surfaces flat on mine and don’t have a problem with mine loosening up. But I’ll keep it in mind just in case.

Thanks. I’ve always been happy with my orders from McMaster-Carr. I went ahead and ordered myself a 2′ bar just in case I ever need it.

Wise choice! I am very happy with my PP3. I also added the scissor and chisel attachments, 50/80 and 2200/3000 stones, and other stuff since then.

I bought the aluminum base with my PP3. It is heavy enough and I have had no problems with it. It is cheaper than the granite base but the main reason that I chose the aluminum base is that it is lighter. My brain and heart wanted the granite, but my bad back wanted the aluminum – My bad back won the debate.

The PP3 also comes with the 1/4″ clamps as well as the LAA. The case with the PP3 sounds expensive, but it’s worth it in my opinion. It is built like a tank! here’s a few photos of the hard rolling case.

They will definitely be good for scissors. The angle on those shears must be more obtuse than 40°. I can go over 50° with my setup. Maybe the WE120 has a shorter angle bar. Anyway, a wider angle bar like Marc suggested will probably fix the problem for good.

I bought the Pro Pack 3 after checking everything out. The case in the PP3 has a telescoping handle and wheels. It is also capable of sharpening/reprofiling asymmetrical bevel angles.

@Bob Harvey
The SA is going to add 24° to the angle so I don’t see how it won’t help you to easily get to 45°. But Marc gave you some good ideas so I’m sure that you will get everything working great. But photos always help.

It’s hard to know what people are really talking about when they don’t show any photos. But I googled goat hoof shears and figured that sharpening them wouldn’t be much different than sharpening scissors. The angle offset from the base with my SA on my WE130 is 24°. The angle out to the outer hole on the angle bar with my aftermarket…[Read more]

It works great for me on my scissors. I forgot what the offset is from the base level for the scissors attachment, but the chisel attachment is offset 26° from base level, if I remember right. But the easiest way to sharpen them is with the sharpie method anyway. The scissor attachment also grips very well, better than I expected it would.

The scissor attachment won’t work for the goat hoof shears?
