I’ve never used the Lansky kit or any other system besides my WE. I figured that I would end up with a WE anyway so I may as well just start with it. You’re doing kinda like I did. I bought the PP3 which came with the 1500/Glass Platen stones. I added the 2200/3000 stones before the 50/80. Most of my knives had to be reprofiled and some of them,…[Read more]

Yeah, Marc is right! I sometimes forget that new people may not be very experienced with reprofiling and sharpening knives. So you do need to be careful and only use the courser grit stones when you need them, especially with knives. And I’m really OCD when it comes to removing steel – I like to remove only as much as necessary. But my previous…[Read more]

Congratulations, Bill! Welcome to the WE family. If you need to do a lot of reprofiling you will love adding the 50/80 grit stones. I just received mine several days ago and they will hog off some steel. I wish I would’ve bought them a year ago. They would’ve saved me a bunch of time and wear and tear on my 100 grit stones, not to mention my arms.

I don’t know any Japanese. I just go by the numbers.

I figured that they were made out of aluminum. But I can see that plastic would work well.

Hi Marc. I remember hearing about that spacer you have under your vise before, and then I forgot about it. Did you make it yourself?

I’m not sure. I’m learning myself and don’t know much about it. I checked Blade HQ where I bought my Launch 1 at and the Rc number for the steel wasn’t mentioned. According to the Kershaw website, their CPM-154 is Rc rated at 58-60. That pretty much goes with my findings with the files. So I’m confident that the files are pretty accurate. I can…[Read more]

Hi guys. I just received my Tsubosan Hardness Tester Files. On my Buck 301 blades the 65 file will bite, but the 60 skates across. On my Kershaw Launch 1 that has CPM-154 steel the 60 file will bite, but the 55 skates. So I guess that somehow the 425M steel in my 1990 Buck 301 was hardened harder than it was supposed to be.

You’re welcome. I’m learning too. And I’m pretty hard-headed! 😁

Yes, they do. Anytime I buy things like this I sand the screw ends and things like that just to make sure that it doesn’t become a problem. So I didn’t have the loosening problems that others have had.
But I received my Chisel Attachment several days ago. When I started sharpening a chisel, I would sometimes hit the lower stone stop pretty good…[Read more]

I just ordered a 6 piece set of hardness testing files that are made in Japan. I will get an idea of how hard the steel in my 301 is. I was planning on getting a set and forgot about it. This thread reminded me. Thanks.

I guess I’ll just have to get a couple of those Japanese knives to better understand what’s going on. Getting some hardness testing files might be good to at least get a general idea of where the hardness of a blade is.

I know and that is what I thought about Buck steel. I never had a problem with any other pocketknife with my whetstones(maybe these should be called Oilstones). I think the steel in my Buck 301 somehow was hardened more than they normally are. But I don’t have a Rockwell tester to test it with.
I have read a lot of scienceofsharp and…[Read more]

Sorry Marc, I meant no disrespect or anything. You have helped me and many others here a great deal and I appreciate it. I just meant that it helps everyone when all can see. That’s all I meant. I guess I should think about how I word things and the possible ways people can interpret it before I submit comments. I’m not very good at online…[Read more]

Here’s a photo of my stones, Marc. I’m not sure why you don’t want to talk here but that’s ok. I would still Rockwell test the Japanese steel before I blamed diamond stones.

I like the aluminum base. It is heavy enough and I haven’t had any problems with it. The granite base looks really nice though.
